That looks great! Nice balance between professional and festive, looks well fitted. Kind of reminds of me of the Dior New Look stuff in the 50's. Very classy.

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you, I love the 50s style!

Fun fact, this design is originally from 1952! It's a retro design they updated and re-released. It looks like 1950's new look style because that's exactly what it is.

3

u/WorkingInAColdMind Jun 19 '22

Absolutely wonderful dress and does channel the classiest of the 50’s looks. Congratulations on the dress and the PhD

2

u/SmartWonderWoman Jun 19 '22

Very well stated! OP will you make me a dress?

I was just admitted to the MA of Education - Instructional Technology program. I would pay you for your services. Thanks so much for your consideration🙏🏽❤️

So gorgeous.

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

I wanted something elegant but girly at the same time. I love this pattern, it's very flattering for the body but still modest enough for the formal occasion. It is complicated, but still easy to follow, so I do recommend!

58

u/Writ_inwater Jun 19 '22

Oh my gosh so much YES. I adore the pattern and think it's perfect for the occasion but mostly I have been really loving navy lately and how many colors it goes with and how it classes up any outfit big time. LOVE 😍 Great job.

18

u/Enlightened_Gardener Jun 19 '22

I have just discovered that navy goes with brown…. A whole new facet of my wardrobe just opened up….

34

u/shitlord_god Jun 18 '22

Every butterick pattern ever :D

9

u/pcapdata Jun 19 '22

I’m not well-versed in this craft but it looks amazing. Formal and stylish. I’m curious about two things:

  1. Do the sleeves fold down?
  2. Does it have pockets?

3

u/Yaglara Jun 19 '22

Below is a link to the pattern.
Answering your questions on my understanding of the fit.
1; no, not really. But you could extend the pattern and create one you can fold. 2; doesnt appear that way. But the skirt fold will probably allow to have them inserted. But if they hold weight, they might change the way the dress 'flows'

u/Violet_Plum_Tea Jun 18 '22

You deserve an honorary degree in sewing!

16

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Aww, thank you!

121

u/alanabanana69 Jun 18 '22

It’s lovely!! If I can ask, what’s your PhD in? I’m currently a 4th year in engineering, and I hope I can make something for my graduation too!

225

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Materials science and engineering. Best of luck to you :)

76

u/lissawaxlerarts Jun 18 '22

Well you nailed the material and the engineering in The dress too!

40

u/AngryAxolotl Jun 18 '22

Omg my PhD is in the same field (Thesis defense happening in August!). It's really cool runing into someone with the same specialization out in the wild like that. Congrats! Also the dress looks amazing!

Do you mind me asking what is the topic of your thesis?

7

u/ShittyShittyNameName Jun 19 '22

Good luck with your defense!

13

u/terminalparking Jun 19 '22 edited Jun 19 '22

You must have a PhD in sewing too because this is amazing!

11

u/alanabanana69 Jun 18 '22

Dang me too!! Congratulations!

10

u/all_armor_no_gun Jun 19 '22

PhD in style.

6

u/I_own_reddit_AMA Jun 19 '22

I used to be MSE in college! All the MATLAB classes actually made me switch to computer science though, had way more fun with that.

mse is still super fascinating to me

4

u/ThePotatoNeverBlinks Jun 19 '22

I’m an engineer, too, and took a couple of materials science electives in my senior year. Loved those - they made me wish I had majored in it. Btw, your dress looks amazing. I’m a stereotypical male who has done just a little sewing (masks, curtains, etc) so I have tremendous respect for your skills! I could never imagine making something so complex!! Congrats on your PhD - that is a tremendous accomplishment. You and your loved ones should be very proud!

2

u/ethics_aesthetics Jun 19 '22

Just scrolled down until I found this. Neat. Cheers and congratulations again.

2

u/Gahvandure2 Jun 19 '22

Holy shit! Congrats, and that seems like a particularly difficult field to become such an expert in. Good on you!

2

u/BenTherDoneThat5555 Jun 19 '22

Wow. You're not only an excellent seamstress but very smart too. Best of luck to you in your future.

1

u/Lucretius Jun 19 '22

Awesome! Is the dress made of some exotic meta-material?

Such a beautiful dress! Congratulations Doctor!

124

u/ConcertinaTerpsichor Jun 18 '22

Very nice! Feminine but crisp and professional. Is this a linen blend?

76

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you! It is a cotton/polyester blend.

12

Thank you!

24

u/Known-Potential-3603 Jun 18 '22

This is stunning and you look amazing in it! So lady like! Beautiful

7

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you!

6

u/Dashiepants Jun 19 '22

All this plus the navy blue was a fantastic choice!

22

u/Eidolonincognito Jun 18 '22

Love this on you and congrats doctor! Could you let me know what type of fabric you used? It looks comfy but also upscale, simply gorgeous!

18

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you! It is a cotton/polyester blend, it has a slight shine depending on what angle you look at it.

22

u/jkwak01 Jun 18 '22

The dress looks extremely well-made! I wouldn't have thought it was handmade had I seen it without prior knowledge.

5

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you :)

13

u/Big_Rain4564 Jun 18 '22

Amazing job and looks great on you.

7

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you!

10

u/vinnietalksalot Jun 18 '22

That seems like the perfect dress for that! Retro, but modern. Love it, and congratulations, Dr!

3

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you!

8

u/seabeeheart55 Jun 18 '22

Congratulations on both your degree and dress!!

3

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you!

7

u/dollymyfolly Jun 18 '22

It’s beautiful! Did you close up the neckline instead of doing buttons on the pattern? I like it better like this!

11

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

I tried covering buttons with this fabric but it just wouldn't work. So I gave up, but it seemed like a lucky mistake since it doesn't look bad without them :)

5

u/rooooosa Jun 18 '22

Absolutely love this dress. Well done! And congrats on your PhD!

3

u/Annuszka Jun 18 '22

Thank you <3

3

u/WanderWomble Jun 18 '22

Gorgeous dress and congratulations! I've just submitted my PhD proposal! Waiting to see if I get a place. 😁🤞🤞
