Hi! I wanted to share with you my latest project. I made a replica of Sansa Stark's coronation outfit from the final episode of Game of Thrones!

Some crafting details about mine:

• I hand embroidered all of the leaves on the big sleeve. Each leaf is unique, and has a variety of silk threads, chenille thread, Swarovski beads and even metal wires. The filigree leaves at the base I digitally designed and machine embroidered. Just doing these leaves took a year!

• The 3d wolf head, the cuffs of the dress, and the scaled back of the shawl (sadly covered by hair) was also all hand embroidered.

• The scales on the back of the shawl have metal wires, beads, and are all sewn on top of velvet that has been shaped into a bubble texture with Shibori technique.

• The fabrics used are the exact same ones used in the show! The leaf fabric is Fossil by Sahco, its a very strange fabric. Almost transparent with a very loose weave but the most stunning texture. The scales on the big sleeve is Ashton by Schumacher. This was $150 per metre and I had to have it shipped via a friend from america. I don't even want to think about the total cost of this costume lmao.

• I drafted the dress pattern from McCalls 6800 coat pattern, however this was HEAVILY adapted. For length, panel width, and to make it a wrap over opening at the front. I'm actually sewn into the dress haha. It's lined with peachskin.

• The dress is almost entirely hand sewn.

• I also made the crown and the breastplate! The crown is sculpted then cast resin, and the breastplate is laser cut then welded steel :)

I've been working on this project steadily since summer 2019, and I'm so pleased with the almost finished result! (I still want to redo the crown, cobble boots, and make all the historical undergarments, stays etc)

If anyone has any questions I'm happy to answer!

Thank you for such a detailed comment about your work and materials used. I came to the comments to ask about the fabrics (because they are gorgeous and I need them) and was so glad to see you posted this. Aside from that, the only other thing I can say is wow. Fantastic marvelous work.

27

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!

42

u/wakattawakaranai Jun 10 '22

All I have to say, as a professional in cosplay, is HOLY FUCKING SHIT and also if you ever compete it, you're guaranteed a Best in Show anywhere. Incredible work that lifelong historial costumers must envy.

12

u/_River_Song_ Jun 10 '22

Ahh thank you!! I actually just a week or so ago won the UK qualifier for the crown championships! Just gotta keep my fingers crossed for the finals.

23

u/glistening_stillness Jun 09 '22

Looks amazing to see it completed! Can I ask how you identified the exact fabric used in the show?

36

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thanks! The fabric is well known in the GOT cosplaying community, as it was used on two previous costumes in the show!

2

u/Chackern68 Jun 10 '22

Amazing work! It’s beautiful!

2

u/No-Duck3059 Jun 10 '22

This is just stunning! Remarkable workmanship and I admire your patience.

645

u/grillbz Jun 09 '22

oh my god, has it really been three years??? i remember when you first posted this project here 🥺🥺 it is a STELLAR piece of work, with all the attention to detail. unbelievable, stunning, never before seen, holy shit

357

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Hahah yes!! I did my first leaf all the way back in 2019 when i started gathering materials. I then put it aside because well, have you seen the size of this project, and then picked it up again in April 2020 when lockdown hit! Have been working on it pretty solidly since then.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

145

u/Sewsewrachel Jun 09 '22

Final project is just stunning. High end, literal museum quality work! Right up there with the royal robes.

93

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!! I visited an Embroidery exhibition last week and say actual real royal robes with the most incredible goldwork. My stuff pales in comparison haha

42

u/concrete_kiss Jun 09 '22

I thought I recognized the red maple leaves! I was in awe at your last post, so much patience and precision! Looks absolutely wonderful in its finished form

14

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!

4

u/Garage_Woman Jun 10 '22

I also have been keeping track of this since your first posted. Severe adhd makes it incredibly hard for me to finish long term projects like this, so I love living vicariously through people like you who can! Thanks so much for sharing. It’s beautiful!

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 10 '22

See I also have SEVERE ADHD haha. Like debilitating level. It's been both a hindrance and a help with this project. Hindrance because yes, pushing through and staying focussed with this project has been so hard. But also help because there's so many parts and different craft mediums within this costume that when I got bored of say, embroidery, I could go work on the breastplate. Or research beads. Or do any of the other 50 things needed for this! I wish you all the best with your projects.

5

u/Garage_Woman Jun 10 '22 edited Jun 10 '22

That’s a good point. Being able to totally switch areas and get refreshed that way. I’m trying to see you as an inspiration instead of brain guilt food lol.

But damn you! Adhd as well! Now What’s my excuse?!? I can’t stop switching to new projects over and over. Doesn’t matter how complex a single project is with different parts, I’ll accidentally bump into a new thing and can’t tear myself away from it or bring myself back to what initially had my fire burning.

Oh well. I think I just need to accept my hobby is learning new hobbies. Finishing anything out of it is an unexpected bonus. Thank you again for sharing your incredible work and challenging people like me to practice self love despite how bright others can shine. You’re adhd person goals with this craft, I hope remember you that on your bad days.

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 10 '22

Hahah thank you for the kind words! What I've found helps me is that I'm not just making this project for the sake of making it, but I'm doing it for big competitions. That way I have a deadline to aim for, I have a challenge to push myself for, and it helps keep me going. Because as I'm sure you can relate, if there's no deadline, there's no motivation!

20

u/Sewsewrachel Jun 09 '22

I also remember the first posts on this!!

109

u/EnOhVeHey Jun 09 '22

You finally finished! Congratulations it is just as beautiful as I thought it would be based on the first snippets you shared! You did an impeccable job and should be so proud!

And now I will go cry, because you started this while I was pregnant for the first time and I remember it so clearly, and now I’m rocking my two year old son in my arms😩.

96

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!! I am childless, and do not want children, so these projects are basically my babies 😂

49

u/EnOhVeHey Jun 09 '22

You make beautiful babies!

56

u/mountainside2004 Jun 09 '22

There isn't a single element, detail, or color in your whole piece that isn't breathtaking. I am in awe.

13

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much ♥️

21

u/Should_Be_Cleaning Jun 09 '22

Wow!!!! It's gorgeous!!!

9

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

thank you!

17

u/JisforJanuary Jun 09 '22

Incredible. I am speechless, really! Never would have the energy to spend so much time only on one project. Wow, wow, wow.

19

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

I did some in between, 2020 I very much worked on and off while making some other silly cosplays, and then 2021 i did lots of small embroidery projects in the summer too as a break, but since may last year I've been working SOLIDLY as I had a big competition deadline haha

14

u/TatorTotHotBish Jun 09 '22

This is really really cool! So well done. How heavy is the entire ensemble? How does it feel while wearing it?

23

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

It's just shy of 10kg all together. Feels wonderful and regal, but man do my shoulders hurt by the end of the day!

7

u/TatorTotHotBish Jun 09 '22

Wow! 10kg, that’s a beast. You certainly wear it well though!

(Also I peaked through your posts. I absolutely love your WW cosplay!!!)

5

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!!

2

u/dis1722 Jun 10 '22

Woah! That’s 22 American pounds!

Do you have a waist tape? Are you wearing it with a good corset?

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 10 '22

I don't! I have stays underneath. But all the weight from the breastplate and the shawl is on my shoulders and not my chest/back etc. The stays help support the dress weight though!

2

u/dis1722 Jun 11 '22

That makes a lot of sense, as the breast plate is made from metal & I’m not sure there is even a way to support it.

Well, thankfully, it’s not your daily wear!

8

u/Myopic_me Jun 09 '22

Absolutely stunning! Great job.

9

u/shemaghs Jun 09 '22

Now that's something I'd be proud of. An amazing piece.

8

u/BetsyBoodles Jun 09 '22

What an achievement!!! Excellent work, there, you industrious thing, it's stunning!

9

u/myrgd Jun 09 '22

Those sleeves are just spectacular!

8

u/Moist_Hedgehog_8210 Jun 09 '22

Wow! You put in that work! Excellent craftsmanship! This is exquisite ❤️

7

u/username987654321a Jun 09 '22

Incredible workmanship!

7

u/Medical-Ad-6460 Jun 09 '22

This is incredible! The level of detail and intricacy on the embroidery… wow!

You should be really really proud of this

6

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you! I am haha.

6

u/Disney_Plus_Axolotls Jun 09 '22

Wow, this is stunning! I can believe it took 3 years, it’s incredibly detailed! You look beautiful in it, amazing job!! 🤩🤩

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!

6

u/BeefyTacoBaby Jun 09 '22

Pardon my language here, but holy fuck that's amazing.

5

u/icansmellcolors Jun 09 '22

Kind of a work of art here. You should show this to an art department in Hollywood and start doing this professionally for movies.

You are a very talented human being.

7

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Hahaha if only it was that easy to get hired!

6

u/icansmellcolors Jun 09 '22

Yeah I hear ya... but honestly I'd think if this thing hit the right inbox or desk you'd get some kind of interest. Just my no experience opinion so you shouldn't listen to me.

This is quality stuff though. I've seen tons of movies and shows that don't have half this talent in their wardrobe department.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much :)

4

u/This_Cartoonist_379 Jun 09 '22

Truly amazing 👍

4

u/siadezigns Jun 09 '22

Loove!! It is beautiful and your username is like a delightful cherry on top!! Congrats on the look!!!

5

u/OgReaper Jun 09 '22

Person from r/all here who doesn't know anything about sewing. I read the title and I was like what could have taken 3 years? Well damn you certainly answered that question. This is wild. Amazing work!

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Haha thanks! Yeah I could maybe have done it faster if I didn't have a job working 54 hours a week but alas

3

u/OgReaper Jun 09 '22

Well of course I think it's implied you weren't working on it feverishly around the clock. Amazing nonetheless!

2

u/Riskthecat Jun 09 '22

54 hours a week!?!? Ahhhhhh:( you don’t have to say but if you don’t mind what do you do for work? I think everyone here would agree this kinda work is where you belong

6

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Hospitality industry sadly 🤢 it's my dream to do costumes for film/TV, it's just a very hard industry to get into!

2

u/Riskthecat Jun 10 '22

I hear ya, I’m an artist and musician and neither of thous are an easy path.. that’s why I’m a handyman:/

6

u/Helpful-Penalty Jun 09 '22

Incredible. I have no words. I do have a question. How many people have offered you $100 to make them one. Lol

Hey! Post this on r/freefolk! (also)

3

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

fanart/cosplay etc isnt allowed in the sub sadly

6

u/Bibliophile-Dragon Jun 09 '22

Is there a game of Thrones one you could do? I'm not sure how active they would be after 3 years though

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

There is! I have posted there :)

2

u/somek_pamak Jun 09 '22

Damn. They should expand given the lack of posts. Anyway cool stuff!

4

u/BobbOShea Jun 09 '22

What an absolutely stunning piece of artistry. Your skills are incredible! Well done.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you :)

4

u/GerardDiedOfFlu Jun 09 '22

Girl, this is INSANE! You’ve outdone yourself!

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!!

12

u/GerardDiedOfFlu Jun 09 '22

I’d be wearing this everywhere 😂 “headed to target, anybody need any mead or anything?”

3

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

It's so heavy though 😂 whole thing is over 10kg

4

u/GrumpyMcGrumpyPants Jun 09 '22

My mother goes walking with runners ankle/wrist weights, though I've read that a weighted vest is superior. I trust that the medical literature would agree that a faaabulous 10kg Sansa cosplay would be the pinnacle of running weights ;)

(And now I'm googling for embroidered sneakers)

4

u/ScubaVix3n Jun 09 '22

The details are stunning. This is beautiful.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you :)

3

u/inesgoodchild Jun 09 '22

I’m blown away. I would never take it off again if I were you. But maybe that’s a little impractical.

Such a great work of art. And great persistence!! Be proud of yourself!! You deserve it.

3

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!! My shoulders hurt so much at the end of the day wearing it 😩

5

u/inesgoodchild Jun 09 '22

We have a dutch saying (i don’t know if it’s used in english) that translates to: those who want to be pretty have to suffer. I guess you found your suffer ;)

I saw this from r/all, and know nothing about sewing. This is ridiculously beautiful.

4

u/Dentelle Jun 09 '22

... I can't convey in words how I feel when I look at these pictures of your work. Something similar to awe, and the reverend feeling of looking at a creation that is both intricate, masterful, and gorgeous. Bravo!

5

u/illuminantmeg Jun 09 '22

This is just stunning. What attention to detail and skill in execution! If I had an outfit like that, I would be inclined to cosplay Sansa Stark all the time forever.

3

u/LumMeSumTreez Jun 09 '22

OMG!!!! It's amazing!! I wish I had that much dedication!

3

u/wtfwtfwtfwtf2022 Jun 09 '22

This is incredible!

3

u/Paticake35 Jun 09 '22

Will you be renting it out?

12

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

God no. Far too valuable

3

u/MissNinny Jun 09 '22

Incredible! What a wonderful garment!

3

u/i_love_pesto Jun 09 '22

Oh it's finally finished? Congratulations! It is gorgeous! Also I love your username too:)

8

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

WELL technically it's wearable. There's still parts I want to do for the competition finals haha. Namely finishing the embroidery I didn't have time to do on the dress collar, making historical undergarments and stays, making her boots, and I plan to cobble shoes for the first time!

2

u/i_love_pesto Jun 09 '22

You've come this far. I'm sure you can handle the rest. Keep up the great work!

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Oh I'm very much looking forward to it!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '22

Not sure why this showed up on my feed but very beautiful. I imagine that took a long time and a lot of skill. Good luck with future projects.

3

u/DaffyDuckisQuackers Jun 09 '22

I have been watching. I actually saved your post (the one with the leaves) so I could check in on your progress. I just found it so incredibly beautiful and your commitment to this project really inspired me. Of course the finished product is amazing. I’ll be watching for your next project. 😊

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much! My next new project won't be till next year as I still have lots to do for this, but I'm glad you enjoy!!

3

u/saltylupine Jun 09 '22

Phenomenal work. Truly stunning and inspiring.

This was the best part of the GOT finale, too.

3

u/MissRachou Jun 09 '22

Hoo you finish it !! I have seen some embroidery a while ago. Congrats the result is stunning ! Pay off the hard work!!

3

u/lariah Jun 09 '22

I remember seeing your progress posts from this. It turned out incredibly (a huge understatement). Congratulations on finishing

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!

3

u/Gunnermannathan Jun 09 '22

Im pretty sure I saw you at MCM Comic con and this looked great there but seeing the detail up close really shows the attention to detail ❤️

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Haha yes I was there! I was entering the UK Crown Championships of Cosplay :) thank you!

3

u/Public-Potato3473 Jun 09 '22

Any words I can come up with won’t do this masterpiece justice. I applaud your dedication and workmanship. It’s got to be one of the most incredible creations I’ve ever seen. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go pick my jaw up off the floor. 👏🏼🏆🥇❤️

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Haha thank you!

3

u/lewemowonbowoiwi Jun 09 '22

ahh!!!! I've been looking foward to this!!!!! holy shit the craftsmanship!! the dedication!!!! that accuracy!!!! 2000/10 this is incredible!!!!!!

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much!!

3

u/Machiavelli1503 Jun 09 '22

Holy shit this is awesome op, looking really really good May I ask how much money into something like this goes?

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thanks! The answer is a lot. I've spent about £3k on it so far. £700 of that was an embroidery machine however (the skeleton leaves at the bottom of the big sleeve are machine done like the real one) but I will be using this for other projects so that was an investment! I also bought all of the screen accurate designer fabrics that were used in the show, which cost about £1.2k. And then the laser cut metal cost about £240 to get done. So yeah, expensive project if you're going for screen accuracy, but you could definitely do it for cheaper. I'm just insane.

4

u/Machiavelli1503 Jun 09 '22

Thanks for the answer and I can understand you. Sometimes I have ideas for projects that get stuck in my head so hard that this becomes the only way I want to do it before realizing how expensive or unnecessarily complicated it will get And I agree with you on the machine part, it's hard to count something like that in because it isn't the only time the machine will be used.

2

u/Machiavelli1503 Jun 11 '22

Additional questions, you wrote you bought the screen accurate fabrics. How did you know which fabric they used and where to find it?

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 11 '22

The fabrics are well known in the game of thrones cosplay community as they've been used on 2 other costumes before. The leaf fabric that is, the scale fabric someone in one of the online groups hunted through the Chelsea design centre back catalogue, as we know they shop there for designer fabrics a lot

u/Mishqup Jun 09 '22

This is amazing! I really love your embroidery work, it's so detailed and elaborate

3

u/CopperCatnip Jun 09 '22

I have nothing to add except to say my jaw literally dropped and is currently affixed to the floor. All the little details!!

3

u/Peacyyyyyy Jun 09 '22

Wow! Amazing and beautiful, great job!

3

u/night-readers Jun 09 '22

Let's all bow down to the Queen of sewing! OP THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!! The detail alone is swoon worthy! But you're killing it with your hair and makeup too 😍

3

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Haha thank you! I admit I actually had a lot of trouble with my wig and plan to replace it for wearing the costume a second time

3

u/night-readers Jun 09 '22

Wait, it's a wig?? I know almost nothing about wigs and thought it was your actual hair!

It still looks amazing!

3

u/Hi-Guys-Im-Broken Jun 09 '22

Bloody stunning!! The details in it are fabulous and I imagine were so tedious. Absolutely tremendous job!!

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!

3

u/E-godson Jun 09 '22

Holy crap! Worth. Every. Minute. This is so nicely done. Brava, my dear!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '22

That is absolutely epic, and a proper use of the word epic. It's impossible to pick one thing to compliment. You should be so incredibly proud of yourself for your skills and perseverance. It's actually breathtaking.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you so much :)

3

u/inkycapgoblin Jun 09 '22

Congratulations on finishing this massive monster project! It looks fantastic and definitely showcases the sheer love and effort you put in. It looks like it belongs in a museum!

3

u/CheyenneJudith Jun 09 '22

This is such an inspiration!!! I’m doing the same for a jacket (but all goldwork) and it’s gonna take over a year to do. I always feel bad that it takes so long and that I should ‘hurry it up’. But to see others take a year or more on something is refreshing. It looks STUNNING and I hope you are feeling proud af, bc you should.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Ahh I'd love to see! I ADORE goldwork, both looking at it and doing it! It's such a beautiful medium. Good luck on your project!! Sending all the good stitching vibes and non-tangled threads energy

2

u/CheyenneJudith Jun 09 '22

Thank you! I’ve finished one skirt panel and I’m onto the next. Out of 7 total panels. It’s fun to do but. Tedious af. Whiiiich is probably what your project was as well. I’m still freaking mind blown. I wish I could see it in person it really does look amazing 🤩

3

u/yourturnAJ Jun 09 '22

You win the subreddit. Fantastic work, holy hell. The embroidery is insane.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Thank you!

6

u/Harony Jun 09 '22

This Just made me think that women back then had to make Very thought out fashion choices, since It would take a considerable amount of time to sew grand pieces.

It's really beautiful

2

u/Alliebeth825 Jun 09 '22

Wow that’s incredible

2

u/FirebrandPaul Jun 09 '22

Looks great! Nicely done

2

u/Jinobin Jun 09 '22

Jesus that is incredible. Do you work in costume making?

3

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Sadly not, it's just a hobby at this point. It's a dream to be able to work on a show like game of thrones!

2

u/Jinobin Jun 09 '22

Well you have the skills to. You should send your portfolio in.

2

u/mishaco Jun 09 '22

this is better than the whole last two seasons.

2

u/Keeppforgetting Jun 09 '22

Omg

Incredible work!! You should be proud of yourself for the amount of dedication, time, and effort it took to get it done :)

2

u/WaitingForNextYear Jun 09 '22

This is absolutely wonderful! I love everything about this costume, and you've made the world this little bit better by creating it. Lovely.

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

That's a lovely comment, thank you

2

u/Gunnermannathan Jun 09 '22

Im pretty sure I saw you at MCM Comic con and this looked great there but seeing the detail up close really shows the attention to detail ❤️

I don't know why people are upvoting this when you're obviously just taking pictures of the actual costume design from the show.

Hi friend, nice to see you here!! So happy to have seen your progress on this cosplay all the way through, hopefully one day I’ll see it in person but I already know it’s amazing, Amazonian ♥️

Ahh thank you my love ♥️

How heavy is it all? Also I’m not sure if you go to cons but are you nervous about the bottom getting messed up from the floor or dragging? What are your plans for it? Really amazing work!! Oh I just read you answered the first question being 10kg thanks:)

4

u/_River_Song_ Jun 09 '22

Haha yes, quite heavy! The dress is lined with much cheaper fabric so that's what picks up any dirt tbh. But it's mostly a costume for competition, so not much walking around on the con floor! I spent most of the competition day sitting in the green room with the breastplate taken off, because I was just too hot

2

u/Riskthecat Jun 10 '22

Oh gotcha:) thanks for the reply. This is so fascinating to me. I’m glad this thread blew up. Not sure if you have one but make YouTube would be a good go for you. Showing the steps of the projects. I imagine you could do Commission work if that interested you.. anyway thanx again and can’t wait to see more!!

2

u/_River_Song_ Jun 10 '22

Sadly with this level of intricacy, nobody would pay the cost of a private commission. For example, this costume would be upwards of 20k. But I'd love to be making this sort of thing for film/TV :)

2

u/Riskthecat Jun 11 '22

Truthin. Yea I wasn’t thinking of going this far with a commission. Hope you get there if anyone deserves to be working in film/tv I’ve ever seen it’s you. Good luck:)

2

u/Geosaysbye Jun 09 '22

Absolutely incredible

2

u/Stonkseys Jun 09 '22

Dude, it's so good that Party City is gonna rip it off and call it The Lone Wolf Queen.

You only get a few days to construct a garment from sketch to finish. This took the YEARS.

Amazing work, so immense and deep and stunning! Question: how did you do the layered breastplate? It looks like plastic with maybe metal on top? Did you use leather or 3d printing or what? It looks awesome and ventilated!

2

Nope not me! I'm English :) only finished the costume just over a week ago! I believe you're thinking of /u/couturetheatrale who won best in show at Dragoncon

I've gone to the Renaissance festival in CA n past years. They bring amazing Renaissance costumes for sale. Your dress would take the prize and fetch a good sum. What size is your dress? Have you had any offers? Your hand sewing is meticulous. I made a Renaissance vest that took some time to make & find the proper designs for it. I ended punching holes and putting gold eyelets in the front.. Then putting hide strings thru the holes to tie the fronts together. I thought that looked more authentic. Of course done by hand. I'm sure the movie industry would love to have your dress.
