Infomaniak a Swiss web hosting company, known for it's privacy focused cloud kDrive just released their free email service

I've been a customer of Infomaniak for quite a while know and I am so happy to see them release a free email service : https://www.infomaniak.com/en/free-email

It includes 20BG of mail storage, 3GB of kDrive storage (that comes with an open-source Office-like suite), a calendar, contact sync and so on. As of the time of writing, it is only available for Swiss user but it will be launched outside of Switzerland as stated in the FAQ.

So, generaly, when I read this kind of news I always wonder how they monetize their product. They do not monetize this one. They rely on all their other paid services to finance it (like web hosting, dedicated server and housing, VOD services, etc.) and they also have a paid plan for kDrive. You can find this claim here (It is in french): https://pages.rts.ch/la-1ere/programmes/on-en-parle/11707435-infomaniak-lance-une-solution-email-en-alternative-aux-gafam-10-11-2020.html?mediaShare=1

You'll find their Privacy Policy here : https://www.infomaniak.com/en/legal/confidentiality-policy

I hope it can helps you improve your privacy :)

have a nice day !

I see this thread is active again so I'll just hijack it for some questions. I'm in the process of switching from Google to something more private and secure. Don't need E2EE or anything like that, just a more privacy focused service. So I've been looking in to infomaniak a bit and just have a few questions I had a hard time finding answers for:

  1. Are email encrypted at rest, or just in transit?
  2. Do they remove personal information, like IP address, from email headers?

Thanks ahead!

Are email encrypted at rest, or just in transit?

They state that the encrypt everything on their servers : https://www.infomaniak.com/en/kdrive

Do they remove personal information, like IP address, from email headers?

I do not know wether they remove it or not. As far as I know, when you send an email, the receiver only sees the IP of the server the email has been sent from and do not expose yours (unless you host your own webmail at home but that's a different topic)

Thanks for your answer. I only checked the information about their email service and their privacy policy so missed the kDrive section. Also found this article on the subject now, where they explain their data center security.

Might actually migrate to infomaniak. Privacy and security seems more than enough for my needs while still keeping the conveniences I want.
