Fake air vent built into a bunker in Normandy
1.1k
u/skip-to_the-end Dec 03 '22
It's an actual air vent, it's an anti-grenade air vent. Shaped so nothing can be thrown down the hole.

Or very simple: )-

That protrusion (e) into the vent is bothering me...surely you could pull it out of the vent pipe a bit to keep the width uniform?
21
u/efficientseas Dec 03 '22
I think the protrusion acts as a shield deflecting any objects that might be thrown in at just the right angle.
8
u/soolkyut Dec 04 '22
That’s not a protrusion, that angled line is the mitre of the pipe in the background (see other elbows)

E looks like it's just the length of that pipe. Referencing from the centerline makes sense

Actually, I just remembered it this time, so maybe now it will stick in my brain the next time someone posts this again!

This is the first time I'm seeing it. Guess I'm one of the lucky 10000.

You're not supposed to know about the lucky 10000 when you're one of the lucky 10000!

You can actually throw a grenade into it from the inside and it will fall out outside as well

Just looked at a rough schematic of how these were designed. The air flow is still up that pipe but it’s a designed in a way that returns objects. Some of the bunkers even had a grenade chute to roll them out from inside.

It's amazing how much time humans devote to murdering other humans and not being murdered by other humans

If you stick a rifle in there it comes out the other end tied into a bow

I want to upvote you but you’re at 69 and the law states I must leave it at that and say nice
Edit: they’re past 69 now so I can upvote

This is how we learn our lesson.

Apparently the law changed while I wasn’t looking

u/Darth_Thor Dec 04 '22
I don’t know if it’s changed or if it just applies to meme subs rather than discussion threads

First you need to look directly at the camera and then hold up a small sign that says "Yikes"

I think it's not a fake vent, it has just some security measures added to it

u/asian_identifier Dec 03 '22
Do you can still gas it or flamethrower it?
2
u/TrainedMusician Dec 03 '22
If you seal both ends, maybe. Although a flamethrower won't work due to the structure which looks like this. So smoke can enter, but objects will simply slide down
}-
1
u/misterfluffykitty Dec 04 '22
No. Long story short only one vent is for intake, it’s filtered, and there is enough pressure to push air (and gas) out of the building through all the other ones, and some were just straight up fake.
-1
u/inactiveuser247 Dec 03 '22
If you stuck a flamethrower in it you’d end up roasting your legs, but it would also make a mess of the folks inside.

I wonder how many kills that got..

The last time this one was posted someone explained how it worked in as simple a way as possible. Was something along these lines:
)—
Basically air can still get in because it’ll travel along the horizontal but anything thrown in will just slide right out the bottom.

Maybe it isn’t fake. Maybe there is a branch in the tube that takes air inside, while leaving another branch dominated by gravity that returns grenades

Imagine your a well trained and well equipped American soldier tasked with clearing this bunker only to die to some trick that came straight out of Loony Tunes

Could also be used as a real air vent. Pipe that supplies air in the middle of the U grenade still does the same thing.

u/aidtibb Dec 03 '22
The amount of fucking times I’ve seen this posted here I would’ve died to a grenade at least 24 times

As a Redditor greatly described it: Y'all gotta imagine it like it was built like this if you look it from the side )-

If i had a penny everytime i see this post i would have four pennies. But still its wierd that it happend four times.

Just plug the bottom hole so the grenade stays confined in the tube, the explosive force should still transfer through the air system.
Or plug the bottom hole, throw in some burning rubber and block the top hole too.

I’ve seen this a few times. The camera work is excellent. Zooming in on the grenade by his feet ads a layer of theatrical elements

So. It's not a fake air vent. It's actually an air vent, but it's designed in a way that you can't throw grenades in.
