Nice to see the Maltese anti aircraft is in working order

343

u/Sxzym Sep 25 '22

Maltese has been defending its shores from pigeons since 1802

45

u/Crypto_Man_WSB Sep 25 '22

Pigeon forge?

21

u/nonotagain0 Sep 25 '22

Original or extra crispy?

4

u/Crypto_Man_WSB Sep 25 '22

Both

7

u/KID_detour Sep 25 '22

Afraid all I can do is a feather

6

u/CabbageYeeter42 Sep 25 '22

And bits of organs found 2 kilometers away

1

u/Rough_Mechanic_3992 Sep 25 '22

Lol

1

u/Mechanical_Zora Sep 25 '22

Is this why a beak hit me last week?

255

u/CJMcCubbin Sep 25 '22

Was it a salute to The Big Unit, Randy Johnson?

73

u/OmarLittleFinger Sep 25 '22

Some poor lad was reincarnated, just to be “blown from a gun” once again.

2

u/Lazy_Breath_427 Sep 25 '22

Give it enough time that same guy is going to get blown up again lol

1

u/AnotherRailsNoob Sep 25 '22

Albeit a smaller gun this time

1

u/Toothygrin1231 Sep 25 '22

Oh no, not again…

6

u/Advance-Puzzleheaded Sep 25 '22

Now just how big was this horny fellow?

2

u/Deep_shot Sep 25 '22

Thank you!!

5

u/pbmadman Sep 25 '22

Honestly this actual canon has nothing on that man’s canon. His pigeon exploded into a feathery cloud. This was mild compared to the carnage Randy inflicted on that poor bird.

300

u/mogreen57 Sep 25 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

I like to think every time that dude gets reincarnated he gets killed by that cannon. Hundreds of years, dozens of different lifes. All ended by that same cannon

66

u/asfg812 Sep 25 '22

Which Douglas Adams book had that as part of the plot? Arthur kills him in every incarnation?

29

u/Whelp_of_Hurin Sep 25 '22

Agrajag! His big appearance is in Life, the Universe, and Everything, but he's also in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (bowl of petunias) and Mostly Harmless (man at Stavro Mueller Beta).

14

u/Pyrochazm Sep 25 '22

I think it was mostly harmless.

3

u/mogreen57 Sep 25 '22

Hitchhikers guide. I forget which volume

3

u/glyphotes Sep 25 '22

Sometimes it's a different cannon. Keeps the suspense up.

9

u/mogreen57 Sep 25 '22

Always the same cannon. Not always this exciting. Sometimes that person is reincarnated as a bug and they get run over by the wheel when the soldiers bring them in for cleaning

3

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

Finally breaks out of the loop to be reincarnated as a Russian grunt to get killed by Himars

49

u/ThatRocketBoi_YT Sep 25 '22

The Maltese battery was only defending its shores.

It gave a explicit warning to the pigeon to stay away when it approached.

After the pigeon didn’t respond, the Maltese anti air threat system well… neutralized the threat.

249

u/mysteriom Sep 25 '22 I'm Deceased

I feel bad for laughing. But I did. A lot.

7

u/murrdurr420 Sep 25 '22

I feel like i only laughed because of the crowds reaction. The way they kinda decrescendo from an OH SHIT to an ahhhaha

5

u/si3rra_7 Sep 25 '22

dont feel bad, fuck the sky rats.

1

u/GrootGR Sep 25 '22

I think the dismayed crowd murmurs might be the best part! "Oh nooo.." "Aww!" "Ohhhh..."

93

u/ConclusionMiddle425 Sep 25 '22

Ah, Malta. The "Concrete Isle". Since lockdown, they even paved over the grass.

Yay.

Source: Me lives here

5

u/pampic7 Sep 25 '22

Why is the sign in English?

34

u/ConclusionMiddle425 Sep 25 '22

It's the Saluting Battery. Firing the guns three times a day was a British tradition when they ruled the island.

5

u/KillerInfection Sep 25 '22

3 times a day?? I hope they recycled some of those cannonballs FFS.

16

u/Night_FoE Sep 25 '22 edited Sep 27 '22

You pack a cannon with powder charges, and then you stuff the cannon shot in for a live shot. For this stuff, and 90% of all 'ceremonial' usage of cannons, there's no cannon ball, just the powder charge.

9

u/LeicaM6guy Sep 25 '22

This is the second post I’ve encountered in the last five minutes that doesn’t seem to know you can fire a cannon without a cannonball. Is this not common knowledge?

2

u/Night_FoE Sep 25 '22

It's probably bot driven bullshit, knowing reddit.

6

u/ConclusionMiddle425 Sep 25 '22

Lmao can't tell if sarcasm :)

23

u/W0MBATC0MBAT Sep 25 '22

Because English is an official language of Malta

13

u/UlteriorCulture Sep 25 '22

So that people who understand English can read it

Valetta is a super cool place to visit. Here's a short vid https://youtube.com/shorts/c4BRkhtvYvQ?feature=share

6

u/winoforever_slurp_ Sep 25 '22

One of my favourite destinations ever. I was lucky enough to be hosted in an apartment by family friends on Merchant Street across from the cathedral on a two week visit a few years ago. Got to wander the streets every day buying pastizzi and cannolis. Good times.

4

u/Boxatr0n Sep 25 '22

Randy Johnson approves

4

u/judge_au Sep 25 '22

Murder? This is pigeon-slaughter at best.

5

u/Travis-Fields Sep 25 '22

This reminds me of the time Randy Johnson threw a fastball and obliterated a bird flying past home plate.

20

u/niloysh Sep 25 '22

It was a government drone. Birds aren't real

8

u/Sarcosmonaut Sep 25 '22

WAKEUPWAKEUPWAKE-

3

u/bleucolardollarz Sep 25 '22

this is just vintage dove hunting

2

u/2x4x93 Sep 25 '22

Would hate to be the gun bearer

3

u/SaraSmashley Sep 25 '22

They're really getting serious about stopping these little guys from crapping on buildings.

6

u/stvnmkl Sep 25 '22

"accidentally"

5

u/Kills-to-Die Sep 25 '22

It's always a pigeon.

A friend's father passed away several years ago. He was a Major or Lieutenent General and it was a big military send off. She looked over at the riflemen just as they were about to fire. They did and a pigeon fainted dead away out of the tree behind them. She was the only one who saw it and was trying to disguise her laughter as crying.

2

u/Sweaty-Bumblebee4055 Sep 25 '22

It’s crazy cuz he only fired one canon too

2

u/dubc4 Sep 25 '22

FOWL ball!

2

u/johnfornow Sep 25 '22

And now for something completely different

2

u/evilminders Sep 25 '22

Are they just shooting cannonballs into the city?

4

u/that1dev Sep 25 '22

No, they don't have cannonballs loaded. Tha blast is all it takes to delete the pidgeon.

1

u/Togfox Sep 25 '22

shift-delete

1

u/jjcoolable Sep 25 '22

They fire blanks

2

u/Soulfulenfp Sep 25 '22

unfortunate

2

u/Remote_Youth_1437 Sep 25 '22

Are there any superstitions about these kinda things 🤣

2

u/2x4x93 Sep 25 '22

Only in Pigeon lore

2

u/Bo_The_Destroyer Sep 25 '22

They fire 'blanks' but that doesn't mean shit if you're only standing five feet in front of it

1

u/Farfignugen42 Sep 25 '22

Or flying, in this case.

2

u/KTommyS Sep 25 '22

They're gonna need those cannons when Mike Tyson finds out about this.

1

u/Neglectedpeach Sep 25 '22

Its always a pigeon

1

u/OpportunityBoth9032 Sep 25 '22

No look +25XP One shot Blow up First kill

1

u/Slobbadobbavich Sep 25 '22

1

u/Trixielarue2020 Sep 25 '22

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

Oof! That’s going to leave a mark.

1

u/Stav73 Sep 25 '22

Surface to air cannon.

1

u/panicattherestaurant Sep 25 '22

😭😭😭😭 why

1

u/Yahmumi Sep 25 '22

No, the pigeon committed suicide.

1

u/-Ihidaya- Sep 25 '22

Oh noooo!

1

u/luxidoptera Sep 25 '22

Oh my god lmao that poor thing got instantly obliterated

1

u/TommyKinLA Sep 25 '22

Made me Smile!

1

u/MrmmphMrmmph Sep 25 '22

Alternate Caption- State Sanctioned Execution of Traiterous pigeon.

1

u/JustA_Reddit-User Sep 25 '22

I would love it if that pigeon got a salute shot as well, which then proceeds to kill a seagull, giving the seagull a shot, killing a pelican, and on and on with larger birds each time

1

u/StolenStrategist Sep 25 '22

Mmm extra crispy pigeon was sacrificed for this

1

u/OreoMochi Sep 25 '22

Wrong time wrong place

1

u/Lazy_Breath_427 Sep 25 '22

Those cannons haven’t killed anything in a while

1

u/StiffyStaff91 Sep 25 '22

Got a free ticket directly to heaven

1

u/juicadone Sep 25 '22

Love the perspective; with no title I’d be wondering why dude is about to suicide in front of a cannon. Lol

1

u/RockT20 Sep 25 '22

What are the odds?

1

u/crouchleader Sep 25 '22

Ahhhh speckled jim!!!!!

1

u/The-better-onion Sep 25 '22

He’s hacking bro

1

u/Woodabear Sep 25 '22

Going frame-by-frame makes it look like that bird was sent into orbit with that blast, lol

1

u/INAE_D3TOX Sep 25 '22

Fuck em flying rats

1

u/100percentish Sep 25 '22

"accidentally"

1

u/H3l1m4g3 Sep 25 '22

1

u/friedsoup35 Sep 25 '22

You are laughing. A bird just got disintegrated and you are laughing.

3

u/WayneAerospace Sep 25 '22

1

u/bibi_bubu Sep 25 '22

"Look up! BIIRD!"

1

u/pouzeHonza Sep 25 '22

I'm laughing, but at same time I feel really bad for pigeon.

1

u/Federal_Promotion_44 Sep 25 '22

I think Randy Johnson did the same thing once with a baseball.

1

u/ChampionshipLow8541 Sep 25 '22

There was also the one that got hit by a baseball pitcher. I think pigeons are suicidal.

1

u/KAMBUI1973 Sep 25 '22

Oh poor bird

1

u/RZU147 Sep 25 '22

Shooting Sparrows is out. Shooting Pidegons, now thats something.

1

u/Surtur6666 Sep 25 '22

No accident here, that cunt had it coming. He Shat on the commanders helmet the day before.

1

u/TheManWhoClicks Sep 25 '22

First that one baseball, now this. Dangerous life they live.

1

u/Jacobaiii Sep 25 '22

Nice shot

1

u/sjuas690 Sep 25 '22

That’s one unlucky pigeon!

1

u/nickjagg3r Sep 25 '22

damn a no-scope

1

u/-maffu- Sep 25 '22

Good shot, Private Wilkins!

1

u/JuryKindly Sep 25 '22

You can see the bird fly away to the right of the smoke. It’s fine….maybe I def seen a wing flap.

1

u/GTR-Zan Sep 25 '22

RIP-igeon

1

u/R-T-O-B Sep 25 '22

this cannon talking to the other cannons that night: HA! I got a kill today. When the last time you guys got a kill? 1535?

1

u/Glittering_Pitch7648 Sep 25 '22

Theres a frame in the last two seconds of the video you can see the bird survived, under and to the right of the smoke

1

u/Acrobatic_Spend5419 Sep 25 '22

Right place, right time

Oops, my pigeon hate is showing again

1

u/Howtoteachguitar Sep 25 '22

That pigeon had it coming

1

u/Staedsen Sep 25 '22

You can see the pigeon still flying between the cannon and the guy at the end.

1

u/Brocolliflourets Sep 25 '22

Having the guy shooting off the explosive look the opposite way of the direction he’s shooting is bold move cotton

1

u/ljanir Sep 25 '22

accuracy 100000 modern militaries no need buy new high tech weapons old ones work just as well

1

u/Holahoohoo Sep 25 '22

This should be a sport

1

u/limaconnect77 Sep 25 '22

Deleted Live. Die. Repeat scene.

1

u/DragonLordAcar Sep 25 '22

Yeah fuck pidgins

1

u/I_AmDaVikingNow Sep 25 '22

If this were a cartoon I'd like to imagine the next scene would be a cutaway to some guy sitting at a table outside a cafe with the body of the now flambéd pigeon landing perfectly on the plate.

1

u/LawsWorld Sep 25 '22

If you listen closely you can hear the birds scream, might have not been a quick death to the ground

1

u/KelVarnsen324 Sep 25 '22

The pigeon actually looks fine. In slow mo, you can see it continue flying. Look just under the barrel of the fired cannon just before the smoke covers that area.

1

u/spycharlie Sep 25 '22

Good! Rats with wings they be

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '22

As a former artillery officer, it brought a tear of joy, fond memory, and I swear, a hint of wolf pussy.

1

u/Megarebe Sep 25 '22

When was this? I saw the fire two days ago, but didnt notice anything

1

u/pinhead-designer Sep 25 '22

A pellet gun would have been sufficient - typical military overspending.

1

u/TachibanaYuriSama Sep 25 '22

Wrong place at the wrong time

1

u/CROWCROWFlightDaPoe Sep 25 '22

The phineas and ferb pigeon finally ran into the wrong object.

1

u/Potential-Bullfrog91 Sep 26 '22

The bird survived this blank fire you can see it flying across beneath the cannon in the background after the shot.

1

u/Midnight_Rider_629 Sep 26 '22

I see no reason why this is nsfw.

1

u/malan4reddit Sep 28 '22

Hey man nice shot.
