Correct. Just like the owls hidden slim leg.

TIL I am an owl

6

u/Nenotriple Aug 13 '22

They way you only say leg made me think they had a third tiny thin leg.

3

u/chrisk9 Aug 13 '22

Only the males do

62

u/Robuhster Aug 12 '22

You should also look up xray of a penguin. Their leg bones are actually pretty long

64

u/GroundStateGecko Aug 12 '22

Penguins have long legs, but they are forever squatting and most of the legs are encased in the torso, so the blood coming back from the cold feet can warm up before reaching the heart.

See penguin skeleton.

8

u/PastelFlamingo150 Aug 13 '22

Huge shoulder blades and breast bones for massive wing muscles to fly through heavy water.

7

u/Blesbok Aug 13 '22

427

u/tomdcamp Aug 12 '22

How? What? Why? Is it curly like a pig’s?

383

u/Henderson-McHastur Aug 12 '22

I think it’s because their whole bodies are kinda compacted. A bun at rest is stockier than a bun in motion, when they get l o n g. I bet the tail just gets hidden under their butts when they hunker down, but gets used properly for balance and whatnot when they’re running.

61

u/can_i_has_beer Aug 12 '22

You mean like the aileron on a Koenigsegg?

48

u/Henderson-McHastur Aug 12 '22 Wholesome

Kinda. Most running animals with developed tails use them similarly to a rudder, helping to make controlled turns while at high speed. Pardon the music, but you can see it in this compilation of cheetahs. If you watch the tail, you can see it whip around quite a bit while the cheetah is running, and in some cases stay absolutely stiff in one direction while making a turn. This directs the flow of air around their body like a rudder directs the flow of water around a ship, making turning much safer and easier.

An aileron functions similarly, but on a different axis - a rudder helps you turn left or right, an aileron helps you spin counter- or clockwise. On an airplane, this keeps you from spinning out of control while moving through the air, and can help you make turns.

ETA: I'm more familiar with this function of tails on cheetahs than rabbits. Judging by the size of the tail, it might not be as useful on them for that purpose.

15

u/Lickwidghost Aug 13 '22

Most animals use them as a weight-offset for balance, which, in the case of high speed predators does become a kind of rudder. Rabbits aren't exactly known for their tree top agility, nor their predatorial behaviour so, much like humans, rabbits tails aren't really needed anymore. In their case the tails just curled or folded up rather shrivelling like ours.

Just my take on the evolution, not sure if it's true

5

u/can_i_has_beer Aug 12 '22

I realized I used the wrong word. I meant spoiler, which on cars is useful to push on the back of the car for more grip. Anyway I meant it more like a joke. But leaving jokes aside, you're right, it's more like a rudder, for high speed turns.

64

u/okay_sky Aug 12 '22

A rabbit's tail connects to their body pretty much at the ground when they're hunkered over like this, and then they have it folded up along their spine. It gives the illusion of a short tail attached much higher up their back than it really is. If they lay down and stretch out so they aren't rigidly holding their tail upright, it lays flat out behind them.

Pull back, let go: "There's a snake in my rabbits foot!"

69

u/Alleged_Duck Aug 12 '22

Why did it take until 2022 to realise this?

Why were they pulling the bunnies tail?

Did they think the stuffing was coming out?

So many questions that need answered.

3

u/chrisk365 Aug 13 '22

A rabbit’s tail, called a scut, is the most delicate part of their anatomy.

3

u/NtRetardJstRlyHigh Aug 13 '22

True, their eyes are harder than diamonds, you can use them to file nails and stuff.

Their eardrums are also more durable than an ambrams tank.

9

u/Katamari_Demacia Aug 12 '22

5

u/Theveterinarygamer Aug 13 '22

Rabbits have very fragile spines and this can lead to serious injury. Even if you don't pull hard, it can alarm the rabbit and they may react suddenly, jerking forward leading to the injury

Source: am a veterinarian

18

u/ShadowProjector Aug 12 '22

I was thinking the same as them. I've read online that it's a very sensitive part meaning you could pull their tail off. So maybe this is close to animal abuse.

Good question btw
