u/MAXQDee-314 Jul 01 '22

There's a slightly clearer picture where you can see it's a puppy from the dog by the door.

Is the guy on the far left flexing with a cat too? I can't tell.
213
u/catsonthemats Jul 01 '22
I actually think it's a puppy based on the length + girth of the body, and the length and size/shape of the paw hanging over his outside arm, plus the larger black dog by the door. Probably a hound in training.

u/ccg5058 Jul 01 '22

Could also be a beaver. Beavers were very valuable for a long time in preindustrial America.

These four men in Montana (near Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park) at the turn of the 20th century advertised their want for wives on the side of a cabin. From left-to-right they were: Bill Daucks, Frank Geduhn, Esli Apgar, and Dimon Apgar. Frank, and Dimon eventually married, but not mail-order brides.
Courtesy of Glacier National Park Photo Archives, photo HPF 9871. (From google)

u/Whatever748 Jul 01 '22
Nice, so the cat guy at least was able to marry
337
u/siccoblue Jul 01 '22
He's the one that I would be shocked if he hadn't. These days it's totally normal to have a dude have his picture taken with a cat but I'd imagine in the 1900s that was a pussy magnet with them thinking "oh I bet he's so tender and loving"

The Apgars in this picture appear to be the sons of the campgrounds' namesake Milo Apgar. Frank Geduhn (cat guy) supplied cabins to early tourists in the area.

Cat isn't a problem. Unfortunately, however, I can only grow a paedo-stache, and therefore decided to go with a beard.
Split rent and food, and chill with someone you can halfway tolerate - sounds like a great deal

By 1901 the indentured servitude and basic slavery of daughters was probably drying up to some degree on the western frontier. The California Gold Rush had already happened and the trails to Oregon and California were much more forgiving than in the past, meaning people were less likely to drop their daughters off on the way and women were less likely to settle somewhere along the path. I mean, shoot, Ford will have been founded 2 years after this picture.
50 years earlier though? I’d bet that they could find or buy a wife in a week’s time.
28
u/BlueBabyButterfly Jul 01 '22
Drop their daughters off along the way. Damn.
21
u/treefitty350 Jul 01 '22
For the wagons at the time, it may have come down to ‘selling’ their daughter or bringing them along and gambling that you all have enough to survive the rest of the trip.

Almost. There’s an American subgenre of black metal that merges bluegrass and other folk influences. Panopticon and their album Kentucky is my favorite. Nechowochen mixes in some more Native American sounds and are great. Aggaloch touches on the folk side, though they’re a bit more ambient and not quite as heavy. Definitely check out their album The Mantle Though. Not a whole lot of it out there, but good stuff.

I personally think numbers 1 and 2 look nice. Need a good scrub and some new threads but, I don't know, I like their stance and energy. My choice of husband was an absolutely abysmal failure so a man that actually works for his family, alongside his missus, has glasses, maybe reads and likes animals, well, its incredibly politically incorrect but if I was on the frontier, I'd give it a shot. I'm a bloody good cook and thrifty, can sew, like knitting, reading and taking care of animals, I used to be a good horse rider, grew up milking cows, keeping chooks for eggs and food, I could've done worse. I'm gonna get shot for this...
42
u/unemployedbuffy Jul 01 '22
None of this is politically incorrect unless you're also implying that you'd want all women to stop voting or whatever - you're just describing what you'd want for yourself. That's always been allowed, and what you describe sounds pretty chill tbh

u/wishitwouldrainaus Jul 01 '22
Fuck no! Women absolutely should do whatever they want and aspire to be wonderful to themselves and each other. I'm aware of the lifestyles women lived in those days. Just mostly bloody brutal. I am aware that I only speak from a position of some privilege and choice after centuries of having no rights.

I did something like this but switch the genders. My wife earns good money and we live rural. I take care of our house, help her with her work, and I take care of the animals. I know how to knit, sew, do laundry and maintain the house overall. Its honestly an amazing life and I would be happy to live out the rest of my days like this.
