Dude with the cat is pulling out all stops. He’s determined.

It worked on me 🤣 I was like hey he looks pretty smart and he's got a cat. I'm in

694

u/Enlightened_Gardener Jul 01 '22

Yup can shoot a bear and write poetry. Probably has a fine piercing baritone.

332

u/yankiigurl Jul 01 '22

My soulmate was born in the wrong era 😂

76

if you look real hard, he might still be there, only one way to find out.

Same. I was like “dibs on cat guy”

57

u/MAXQDee-314 Jul 01 '22

Is the guy to the left holding a raccoon or another cat?

60

u/glassandstuff Jul 01 '22

Maybe he just rolled up a blanket for the photo since no one would be able to tell the difference

47

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jul 01 '22

"Dude trust me, they won't be able to tell, the Ladies love cats."

32

u/FakingItSucessfully Jul 01 '22

To be fair, the ladies also love blankets lol

6

u/MAXQDee-314 Jul 01 '22

Considering that they are looking for "wives", he just might be "uncomfortable."

17

u/lordtweakslide Jul 01 '22

There's a slightly clearer picture where you can see it's a puppy from the dog by the door.

Dogs, puppies, cats. Reading, writing. home building. I believe they may be considered a tempting group of fellows.

u/Silly00rabbit Jul 01 '22

Is the guy on the far left flexing with a cat too? I can't tell.

213

u/catsonthemats Jul 01 '22

I actually think it's a puppy based on the length + girth of the body, and the length and size/shape of the paw hanging over his outside arm, plus the larger black dog by the door. Probably a hound in training.

92

u/ccg5058 Jul 01 '22

My vote is ground hog, he was the one missing a little something in the group

51

u/catsonthemats Jul 01 '22

I change my vote to groundhog.

9

u/Sticky_Quip Jul 01 '22

Could also be a beaver. Beavers were very valuable for a long time in preindustrial America.

9

u/catsonthemats Jul 01 '22

Not many beavers are going to be out playing in the snow or allow a grown ass man to hold it like a puppy. Those fucks are aggressive and carry diseases.

These four men in Montana (near Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park) at the turn of the 20th century advertised their want for wives on the side of a cabin. From left-to-right they were: Bill Daucks, Frank Geduhn, Esli Apgar, and Dimon Apgar. Frank, and Dimon eventually married, but not mail-order brides.

Courtesy of Glacier National Park Photo Archives, photo HPF 9871. (From google)

708

u/Whatever748 Jul 01 '22

Nice, so the cat guy at least was able to marry

337

u/siccoblue Jul 01 '22

He's the one that I would be shocked if he hadn't. These days it's totally normal to have a dude have his picture taken with a cat but I'd imagine in the 1900s that was a pussy magnet with them thinking "oh I bet he's so tender and loving"

180

u/wqldi Jul 01 '22

Dude knew how to get bitches in a place without bitches.

51

u/NoninflammatoryFun Jul 01 '22

Well and if you’ve read stuff like little house on the prairie, cats could be hard to find and you NEEDED them for rats and stuff.

12

u/IconWorld Jul 01 '22

He doesn't actually need to hold the cat. He's such a pussy magnet, it just sort of stuck to him.

16

u/jorjakelly71 Jul 01 '22

My thoughts exactly! I was like…yup, I’d pick him 🤣

266

u/millese3 Jul 01 '22

Esli Apgar and Dimon Apgar

We stayed at glacier national park 5 years ago at Apgar campground. I feel like that cannot be a coincidence.

64

u/Rawrby Jul 01 '22

Might actually be named after them! How cool is that :)

109

u/RonnieVanDan Jul 01 '22 edited Jul 01 '22

The Apgars in this picture appear to be the sons of the campgrounds' namesake Milo Apgar. Frank Geduhn (cat guy) supplied cabins to early tourists in the area.

29

Grow a good moustache and pose with your cat. I’m at the point where I would consider it simply not to have to pay for rent and food on my own.

18

u/DannyAvocado_ Jul 01 '22

Cat isn't a problem. Unfortunately, however, I can only grow a paedo-stache, and therefore decided to go with a beard.

Split rent and food, and chill with someone you can halfway tolerate - sounds like a great deal

Who are they advertising to. Is there a lot passing trade in the wife market.

46

u/treefitty350 Jul 01 '22

By 1901 the indentured servitude and basic slavery of daughters was probably drying up to some degree on the western frontier. The California Gold Rush had already happened and the trails to Oregon and California were much more forgiving than in the past, meaning people were less likely to drop their daughters off on the way and women were less likely to settle somewhere along the path. I mean, shoot, Ford will have been founded 2 years after this picture.

50 years earlier though? I’d bet that they could find or buy a wife in a week’s time.

28

u/BlueBabyButterfly Jul 01 '22

Drop their daughters off along the way. Damn.

21

u/treefitty350 Jul 01 '22

For the wagons at the time, it may have come down to ‘selling’ their daughter or bringing them along and gambling that you all have enough to survive the rest of the trip.

10

u/Test19s Jul 01 '22

Black metal is so fascinating. It’s literally what people thought rock and roll was all about back in 1957 and it has so many different underground niches (even if some of them are full of Nazis or misanthropic anarchists).

3

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Jul 01 '22

Almost. There’s an American subgenre of black metal that merges bluegrass and other folk influences. Panopticon and their album Kentucky is my favorite. Nechowochen mixes in some more Native American sounds and are great. Aggaloch touches on the folk side, though they’re a bit more ambient and not quite as heavy. Definitely check out their album The Mantle Though. Not a whole lot of it out there, but good stuff.

I personally think numbers 1 and 2 look nice. Need a good scrub and some new threads but, I don't know, I like their stance and energy. My choice of husband was an absolutely abysmal failure so a man that actually works for his family, alongside his missus, has glasses, maybe reads and likes animals, well, its incredibly politically incorrect but if I was on the frontier, I'd give it a shot. I'm a bloody good cook and thrifty, can sew, like knitting, reading and taking care of animals, I used to be a good horse rider, grew up milking cows, keeping chooks for eggs and food, I could've done worse. I'm gonna get shot for this...

42

u/unemployedbuffy Jul 01 '22

None of this is politically incorrect unless you're also implying that you'd want all women to stop voting or whatever - you're just describing what you'd want for yourself. That's always been allowed, and what you describe sounds pretty chill tbh

17

u/wishitwouldrainaus Jul 01 '22

Fuck no! Women absolutely should do whatever they want and aspire to be wonderful to themselves and each other. I'm aware of the lifestyles women lived in those days. Just mostly bloody brutal. I am aware that I only speak from a position of some privilege and choice after centuries of having no rights.

Sad that season 6 sucked but would still recommend the show if this is your fantasy! It's spicy but loving and very true to the books.

u/WaddlingHippos Jul 01 '22

I did something like this but switch the genders. My wife earns good money and we live rural. I take care of our house, help her with her work, and I take care of the animals. I know how to knit, sew, do laundry and maintain the house overall. Its honestly an amazing life and I would be happy to live out the rest of my days like this.
