They're a 10 but they paid the journalist for that score

963

u/kerbalpilot Jul 01 '22

They're ten... Ten dollars for gloves for your character. 33% off today only!

215

u/EFTucker Jul 01 '22

You’re cute for thinking Gloves are only $10

128

u/Dalzombie Jul 01 '22

They'll make them $10 per finger if they know they can get away with it.

61

u/EFTucker Jul 01 '22

There are Gloves on the steam market that are like $800 for CSGO

44

u/Dalzombie Jul 01 '22

Which is frankly downright stupid. Worst part is, someone somewhere is or was willing to pay a price like that.

22

u/maffiossi Jul 01 '22

A dude in my friendlist uses this system to buy new games. I don't think he has used his own money for years. Think he is using some kind of program (tracker thingy?) Or something to make the most money out of items.

8

u/Wemblerry Jul 01 '22

One of my friends does this too, he got a 500$ knife out of a crate and spent it all on stuff in the summer sale and a pre-order for shootas blood and teef

u/Nihilikara Jul 01 '22

If it's stupid and it works, is it really stupid?

I'd consider that price more disrespectful and selfish than stupid.

Not as dumb as a knife for 50 dollars in valorant, csgo skins are resellable and thus keep their value.

5

u/H-N-O-3 Jul 01 '22

wait till u reach the knives ... Wait till you reach to certain patterns of skins on knives

7

u/Dawn111700 Jul 01 '22

My friend used a website for opening cases since the actual cases never really drop shit except for rare occasions. The one time I actually saw him get anything from an actual csgo case was a fac new ak. Yet when he used the site he ended up getting 3 knifes in the span of a week for a little less than 100$ I think and 2 of them were fades and the other was a fac new free hand “Butt plugs” lol he made a shit ton of profit and I was low key pissed that it ain’t happen to me but also really happy for my boy. Sadly someone hacked his account or something went wrong with a trade and they were able to get every skin he had tis sad.

I bought a skin from ubisoft for $3 that applies to every gun, and is Emerald green and very crystalline and shiny. By comparison in CSGO there are 3 different emerald skins, for 3 different guns, and those are respectively $20, $15 and $12. They arent shiny either.

EA only said that because they want to convince the masses that multiplayer is better so they can shove micro-transactions down your throats to show off to your multiplayer friends.

801

u/Cam_ofblades Jul 01 '22

There’s only one game that is multiplayer that I can enjoy without MTX (Micro-transactions) and it is Warframe. You can even obtain the premium currency of the game without paying a dime

377

u/OwnYesterday3121 Jul 01 '22 Helpful

That’s what i like about sea of thieves.

496

u/lord_pizzabird Jul 01 '22

Every time I see anything about that game I think, "that looks cool. I wish it was just a single player game".

So sick of multiplayer games. I want to play games to get away from people, not the opposite.

218

u/anotherusername23 Jul 01 '22

I'm with you, but I keep feeling we are a minority. I'm currently getting lost in Cyberpunk and I love the privacy for lack of a better world.

Even games that can be single player but you have to be in lobbies with others, like Ghost Recon Breakpoint, bother me.

This is my refuge leave me be.

125

u/Xentropy0 Jul 01 '22

We aren't a minority, but all of the development money is going into MTX games because it's a better return for the AAA companies. I have a feeling the PC scene is going to become a refuge for single player games due to indie developers.

36

u/ic_engineer Jul 01 '22

Demand will drive some availability but the PC market has always been broader generally. Fewer barriers to entry for competition.

The newer generation of player grew up connected so I think for them it might be just as jarring for things to be entirely offline. That's just speculation on my part though.

30

u/lilnext Jul 01 '22

Fewer barriers to entry for competition.

Plus the added benefits that I can still play games I bought 10 years ago on the new system I build. Don't have to buy skyrim for the 6th time. Just a third.

4

u/mrloooongnose Jul 01 '22

I would argue the opposite. Console exclusives are the main drivers of great single player games, because Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft can afford to publish games which are system sellers and don’t need to rely on MTX or multi player.

Games like God of War, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us and many more are all singe player AAA games.

→ More replies

14

u/Hailruka Jul 01 '22

Sony proves we aren't a minority, having their big first party games single player God of War, HZD, Persona, Dayz Gone, Last of Us.

Where as Microsoft pushes their biggest game into a microtransaction hell with Halo Infinite.

Its the main reason why half way through last gen I swapped from MS to PS, quality games where I can ignore other people.

I was so disappointed that Far Cry 6 decided to remove all human companions in a game filled with turrets mounted in vehicles, and cram 1/4 of their achievements behind the most mundane coop tasks. It's FAR CRY, I want to feel isolated and fighting an uphill battle, not be staring at a lobby looking for people to join

4

u/Alternate_Skater Jul 01 '22

I've been playing Far Cry 4 again the last week or two and decided to pick up 6 in the Uplay summer sale. I'm still in a bit of disbelief that they removed staple features like weapon pickups or throwing rocks, kept 5's terrible armor system, and keep pushing for Far Cry to be a multiplayer campaign.

3

u/LesserKnownHero Jul 01 '22

Also, fuck the special missions. At least in 5 you could go in guns blazing. The special mission in 6 drags them out so long to...find shade.

Like seriously, I don't have a canteen? A small beer cooler? The sense to go take this thing that can't be out in sunlight during the night?

7

Tbf it's also not just the people, but the limited scope of multiplayer game. It's especially a bummer for such an otherwise pretty and interesting looking game.

30

u/Inn_Unknown Jul 01 '22

I am the same I am so tired of everything having to always be a online experience.

Right now I have been enjoying Elden Ring, Horizon FW, and Dragon's Crown BC I don't have to deal with people unless I truly want to. I am free to play alone the whole time.

Only exception I ever make with this is when I wanna play a fighting game like MK11, there is just no true challenge comparable to facing a actual human in those games, but even then I am at least able to mute everyone and play the opponents instead of hearing their trash talk and terrible tastes in music that sounds like its underwater through their mics.

I remember starting a game I thought was single player, I'd chosen every option in settings to make it so. Got through the intro section then when I walked into a safe house there were just loads of people, players. Immediately quit, some days I just want to destress, away from human interaction which is tiring af for me.

The only thing worse than multiplayer is surprise multiplayer.

3

u/Antigone6 Jul 01 '22

This is my exact experience with SoT. Played through the whole prologue but was just immediately put off by the thought of forced PvP. Let me sail and explore on my own if I want.

Warframe is the biggest exception, I think. The only time I really interacted with players was exchanging parts for currency, and if I went to mindlessly farm stuff.

I think it’s because, despite having some amazing experiences with some players from the days of Halo 2 all the way until recently, the amount of just absolutely shitty people and players with the skills of poorly-coded farming bots (WoW, Lost Ark, Monster Hunter, etc), I’ve been almost completely turned off from any sort of online gaming interaction. Hell, I haven’t used a mic in CoD since BO2 and haven’t even bothered touching the series after MW.

I want to relax, follow a story, build a character, see a world. Online multiplayer just does not do that for me anymore and is often more frustrating than anything else.

Warframe absolutely rakes it in with the micro. However not once do you ever feel the need to actually purchase anything from microtransactions unless you're like oh I just spent 17 hours getting the frame I wanted to and I need this weapon that's going to take me another day of grinding let me just go ahead and spend $3.99 on it. I never once feel like I'm overpaying for anything and the vanity selection is very Superior with lots of cosmetics being actually good and the color palettes being exceptionally unique. However you can play and customize your character exactly like you want to without having to spend any actual money on it. The in-game currency used to buy items can actually be traded between players fairly easily for things that you can also buy on the marketplace. You can make some quick cash by underselling what the micro transactions are going for.

It turned the marketplace into microtransactions are the best place to buy if you can't find anybody that has that in which that case that means it's rare and they probably know what they have. Honestly the microtransactions were done so well in Warframe that it's almost a welcomed addition because it substitutes in where the player community cannot and because of the nature of the game nobody really feels truly overpowered because you're all overpowered.

14

You need to sell stuff to someone who paid for Plat though. And to get decent money you'll need to grind the hell out of it. Last time I tried to come back I think I sold non complete Frost Prime for 300 or so, and he was vaulted. Rare cards often go for 20, more if you level them up or have a very rare card. 20 is a slot, jigsaw or a potato and you'll need a lot of those. Although I'd say anything but slots is a waste of plat if you're f2p. At the same time not having a potato will limit your power level hard.

I'm a founder, so I can't say I was stranded for plat. But IMO pure F2P Warframe will become a second job.

9

u/xenorous Jul 01 '22

I definitely paid for plat in warframe- but, it’s one of the few games that I felt you could get endgame stuff in a reasonable time for free. Like, if you play normally, sold all the rare cards and stuff and used them to upgrade 1 frame. You can hang in end game.

I never felt like I NEEDED to pay to have one powerful frame.

3

u/Occulto Jul 01 '22

You need to sell stuff to someone who paid for Plat though. And to get decent money you'll need to grind the hell out of it.

Which unless you genuinely love the grind, just becomes a shitty paying job.

I've seen plenty of players boast about grinding for hours in other games, and the real money value works out at a handful of dollars an hour.

Which is like thinking you've gamed McDonalds by not paying for a burger, but instead you spent a couple of hours picking up trash in the parking lot and getting a "free" burger in exchange.

4

u/Wolfbanes Jul 01 '22

Sure, your opinion works if you see Warframe as nothing but a job. But I would argue it's more like an arcade.

"Hey, you can buy this prize for $3.99 or you can play some fun games for a bit and redeem it for free. Or leave if you'd like. Really, entirely up to you!"

42

u/Cautious_Hold428 Jul 01 '22

Not to mention The Sims 4, which has most of it's fans falling over themselves to buy the new content that comes out nearly monthly.

12

u/Inn_Unknown Jul 01 '22

My daughter loves Sims 3, only reason I have that game and its expansions is due to having bought them as they came out back in the day.

I saw S4 on sale on steam and looked at since she really wanted it and the DLC plus the game is insanely expensive. I told she will have to settle with 3 BC I am not spending that much for it.

14

u/BukkakeKing69 Jul 01 '22

Honestly if she loves Sims 3 there is a decent chance she won't bother with Sims 4. I bought my GF Sims 4 years ago and she barely touched it, they cut out too much stuff she liked. It basically just looks nicer and that's about it.

u/compujas Jul 01 '22

It's truly predatory. This is one of the big things I've been trying to teach my son lately now that he's getting into Fortnight and Fall Guys. With Roblox we let him buy (with his money or as gifts) currency because he wanted to buy things that actually expanded the game or added real content (new character classes and abilities, things like that). But now with Fortnight he says that everyone else has skins and emotes and he wants to buy them, but I tell him that it doesn't actually enhance the game in any way, it's just what your character looks like which doesn't matter.

It doesn't help either that half of youtube creators these days are just gambling on loot boxes and insta-buying battle passes and skins, making impressionable kids think it's what they need to do. Or worse making it seem like content creation is easy and lucrative and if you make videos you'll be rich and can do the same things they all do. But that's a different story for a different day because I'm starting to rant.

26

u/vaporking23 Jul 01 '22

I have been in a constant battle with my kid and wife over the last couple of months about vbucks. Not a day hasn’t gone by that he’s not asked me for more money. We got him a card for the end of the school year. I don’t know how I can explain any further that the money for Fortnite gets you no value. That Roblox actually got you stuff or Minecraft. They’re different.

12

u/compujas Jul 01 '22

It's difficult depending on their age, they just don't understand value yet. With him, it was probably 2 years ago or so that he wanted robux, so we sat down with him and asked what he wanted to do with them (because I have no clue about anything Roblox). He explained that one of the games he played you could buy extra classes with abilities and stuff, so I said that was fine because at least it expands what you can do in the game and it's not just changing what your character looks like which doesn't change the game at all.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when we finally let him start playing Fortnight and he asked for vbucks so I asked what he would do with them. He said buy skins and emotes. So I said, does that change the game at all or just what your character looks like? He wasn't happy about it but he understood at least. He asked a few more times over a few days with a pouty face and I just said "does it change the game?" and he'd argue but we stood firm and now he stopped asking.

Hopefully it sticks over time as he's more able to control what he buys himself. He's very impulsive though so we'll see. He argues that he'll buy it with his money, but it's the principle of it in this case. He needs to learn that it has zero value and it's just as well that he burns his money.

Yeah, I wish more people would understand. Developers are talented and what EA makes are actually incredible technical feats. They make some of the best looking, best sounding, video games on the market. The problem is that their share holders don't think high sales is good enough anymore. Every game needs to be a 10 year profit generating machine fueled by micro-transactions. And thus... we get very pretty games, rushed to the finish line with bugs and lined with marketing and pay-for-fun game mechanics.

Damn jack even ratioed them lol

72

u/SpectreGBR Jul 01 '22

Explain like I'm not old, ratioed?

134

u/B1GTOBACC0 Jul 01 '22

It's referring to the ratio of likes. When a reply has way more likes than the original tweet, that's getting "ratioed."

42

u/AntiBox Jul 01 '22

I thought it was the ratio of comments to likes, ie high comments + low likes = people disagree with you = ratio

27

u/COUCHESCOUCHESCOUCHE Jul 01 '22

That's the old (and better, IMO) definition

5

u/B1GTOBACC0 Jul 01 '22

That's another use of it, but in this context ("Jack ratioed him"), it's a comparison of the tweet/reply.

u/MisirterE Jul 01 '22 edited Jul 01 '22 Helpful

Essentially, Twitter only allows you to Like and Retweet. There is no visible option for negative feedback (aside from leaving a negative reply).

As a consequence of this, Twitter had to adapt by creating a new method of negative feedback. This method is the "ratio", which is when a negative reply gets a notably higher Like count than the thing it's replying to. Hence, it has the better Like ratio, which is otherwise very unusual for a reply.

Here, Jack has ratioed EA, because EA's post has 12.6k likes, but Jack's reply has over 45.9k.

(A "downvote" option has recently been added, but as far as I'm aware this has no impact except for making Twitter alter its algorithm for you specifically so you see things like that less often, so ratioing isn't going away)

21

u/suckmyleftunit Jul 01 '22

Wow thank you kid. Now what about 'based'? I really don't get it.

25

u/MisirterE Jul 01 '22 edited Jul 01 '22

The meaning of "based" is a little bit more loosely defined, but I think the most accurate summary is "I enthusiastically agree with this, and assume others with similar beliefs to mine would feel the same way".

Of course, it doesn't help that there is also another definition, which I think (I'm a bit less confident about this one) could be separately summarized as "I have a great respect for this (even if I don't necessarily agree), specifically BECAUSE the actions they have taken display a noteworthy confidence and disregard for how it would be percieved by others".

Unfortunately, unlike Ratioing, which has a single and obvious definition, Based is a lot more context sensitive, so it's a bit more difficult to explain. From those lengthy definitions, though, I think it's fairly obvious why a shorthand has developed.

4

u/americannarwhalofthe Jul 01 '22

The second definition can be the other way around, it’s also when someone expresses a like for something that seems to go against their perceived values, like when a guy with a PlayStation expresses fondness for Halo or politically when a Republican supports gay rights or a Democrat that supports gun rights.

Well made single player will always be amazing. Witcher 3, God of War, and Breath of the Wild are still 3 of my favorite games of all time and they are all 3 verging on being "old"

37

u/FrightenedTomato Jul 01 '22

I play games to relax and unwind after a long day... Ya know? Multiplayer games for the most part are just too stressful to be fun for me.

Single Player games are where it's at - so many fantastic single player titles too.

EA makes huge revenue from multiplayer games so they want to push them whereas most single player games only make money from DLCs.

13

u/LabCoat_Commie Jul 01 '22

This has been my feeling as well for a long time.

I don't have enough patience to listen to a bunch of people screaming at me for not following Current Meta and throwing slurs around at each other while treating every single match like they're qualifying for a professional League tournament.

56

u/Pktur3 Jul 01 '22

Tbh, even un-amazing single player is better. No waiting on servers to be available, no downtime for maintenance on the connecting servers, it’s more chill as you’re at your own speed, no assholes who might or might not be cheating, no assholes who’s chat/voice you get to see/hear…

Am I supposed to believe multiplayer is for “friends”? Nah…I’ll invite my real friends over to drink and play board games. Video games are for me-time.

EA planning on adding "gamer mode" to future single player games. Every time you kill an enemy npc, there's a chance they'll call you a slur or say they fucked your mother.

15

u/totokekedile Jul 01 '22

Five years is old??

5

u/jcarrut2 Jul 01 '22

Probably depends a lot on your age relative to the age of the games you're playing. I think of games that came out in the last ten years as relatively recent, but then I was a child of the NES era.

I play single player games, but I don't think the tweet is implying that liking them is bad. I enjoy games individually and the hobby in general. I think it's only natural to want to share that with a partner, and sometimes maybe they can watch you play Fallout or you watch them play Dark Souls. But other times I want us both laughing and shouting at each other while trying to make a burger in Overcooked.

If this tweet weren't made by a soulless, trash company like EA I wouldn't see a problem with it.

Meanwhile single-player games like Hades keep getting rewards, while EA is costantly criticised.

Also, let's not forget how they tried to turn the sims franchise into multiplayer game and how quickly changed after what happened with SimCity 2013

6

u/Seanspeed Jul 01 '22

Meanwhile single-player games like Hades keep getting rewards, while EA is costantly criticised.

EA doesn't care much about how much the non-representative online gaming community criticizes them when the average gamer is buying their games and playing them and making EA obscene amounts of money.

23

u/VikingBattleram Jul 01 '22

Honestly gaming has become so toxic and full of micro transactions that I'm loosing interest.

16

u/J_A_R_U Jul 01 '22

Play some single player games if that's the case. Some that I would recommend are:

Red Dead Redemption/Red Dead Redemption 2

God Of War

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Last Of Us/The Last Of Us Part II (although I personally am not a fan of the second TLOU game, but that's up to debate and you should try it if you haven't already and form your own opinion)

Uncharted series (Uncharted 1, 2, 3, 4 and Lost Legacy)

Witcher 3

Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West

Just need to find what you're looking for. FPS games hog all the attention because their player base complain the loudest over every single little change.

Narrative-driven games have always been out there, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Souls games, Final Fantasy, Nier Automata, beyond the toxic esport RTS shitshow there's Civ, Age of Empires, Total War, and the oldies and goldies KotOR, Chrono Trigger etc etc...

Hell Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs get shit on but they're epic open world games, and after all the bug fixes Cyberpunk 2077 is a gorgeous, purely single-player ride.

12

u/SteinsGah Jul 01 '22

You just need to look out of AAA. There are still tons of great single player games without any microtransactions. Games from smaller studios are usually more passion driven and it shows.

5

u/Seanspeed Jul 01 '22

Stay away from gaming communities online. They tend to make everything seem much worse than it really is.

Not saying there aren't very real issues to complain about, but gamers online do nothing but complain and have no ability to talk about things with nuance - everything has to be spoken of in hyperbolic terms - even though there's still tons of amazing games to enjoy.

3

u/anonymous242524 Jul 01 '22

This is a half truth.

People enjoying Diablo Immortal would say the same.

But that game literally represent a hellscape for the future of gaming.

Not enough people seem to understand the ramifications of what that game means, simply because they find it enjoyable.

It’s a dangerous mindset, even when it’s a war that has long been waged, and that it honestly seems we’re losing.

Can someone please ELI5 who or what EA is describing as a 10?

52

u/Finletter_M20 Jul 01 '22

https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/ea-tweet-single-player-games-reactions/

With all of that said, EA jumped in on the "They're a 10, but..." meme trend that every brand is trying to capitalize on, but it did so in the worst way possible. EA talked down to those that exclusively play single player games and much to the dismay of many gamers out there, this rubbed them the wrong way. Given EA's history with terrible online game launches, being dismissive of single player games, and so on, gamers retaliated against this tweet very quickly.

6

u/MrDude_1 Jul 01 '22

That sounds even better because it means they probably socialize outside of gaming.

They can also pause and save the game whenever they want instead of being trapped playing because they're dedicated to playing with other people.

Also their game isn't dependent upon external servers or anything so you could play the game 10 years from now and it'll still work.

I'm actually not seeing any downside to this.

Of course I wouldn't expect EA to understand that since we've had their heads up their own asses for so many years.
