u/All_Work_All_Play Nov 29 '22
It's a single yellow plate too...
I don't support this type of lift (and I'm glad it's been changed) but FFS if you're going to screw up your physiology at least do it after more than a few years of lifting.

I may join you on that. I just threw my back out glancing at that image. Really hope that it's staged or photoshopped in some way...

Great form totally won't herniate a disk.

u/ManyThing2187 Nov 29 '22
I actually have a friend who lifts like this. She has some weird thing with her spine that makes it super flexible and when she lifts it just goes up like that. It does something similar when she does squats and deadlifts too. It still freaks me out to look at but she lifts incredible weights.

u/BitchAssWaffle Nov 29 '22
Lot of powerlifters have extreme arch on bench cuz it limits their range of motion

The IPF until recently: yep, that looks totally fine for me.
18
u/Hero_of_Hyrule Nov 29 '22
Did they finally change the ruling on that crime against lifting?
17
u/JJustRex Nov 29 '22
yes the elbows now need to go below the shoulders or something along those lines

That man could act as a trebuchet while doing sit ups
11
u/Wide_Loss Nov 29 '22
that's a catapult, trebuchet would go to the person that did the plank for 4 hours straight

u/emotionaI_cabbage Nov 29 '22
Athlean X doesn't give advice like this whatsoever though lmao.
I don't even watch his content anymore but still, there are WAY worse fitness people on YouTube. He's decent.

u/Vikseba Nov 29 '22

Benching without a 90 degree arch is KILLING YOUR GAINS
18
u/TheRoguePatriot Nov 29 '22
Two weeks later:
"Why benching with a 90 degree arch is KILLING YOUR GAINS"
9
u/TopiTheObscure Nov 29 '22
"The latest research shows clearly that 90 degree arch is TOO NARROW, if you're not benching with at least 150 degrees, YOU'RE NOT DOING IT RIGHT!"
9
u/CreedThoughts--Gov Nov 29 '22
Then another two weeks later he makes a new video and makes the first point again.
And all these videos will get 2-5M views.

In that lift type, the only rule is that feet must be on the ground and the bar has to touch your chest, so in comps you see people lift maybe 4 inches. It's BS
inb4 "It's a different technique bro!".
16
u/emotionaI_cabbage Nov 29 '22
Not anymore. IPF have adjusted their rules so lifts like this one wouldn't count anymore either.
5
u/Danubinmage64 Nov 29 '22
Pretty sure your ass must touch the bench.
Also they recently added a ruling to powerlifting fixing this issue. Lifts must have your arm parallel to the ground at the bottom of the lift

u/avwitcher Nov 29 '22
It's so ridiculous when people are setting PBs by not even attempting to get a full range of motion in. The only person you're bullshitting with that nonsense is yourself

āAlright bro, plant your feet on the ground, arch your back and hold your breath as you lift⦠perfectā

u/Moist-Meat-Popsicle Nov 29 '22
Reminds me of those dudes doing arm curls where they are swinging their hips more than they are bending their elbows.

I consider bench pressing like this cheating because 1 you donāt move the bar as for as you are supposed to and 2 with the back at that angle instead of it being like a push up type move it become like you are pushing something down. Like when you are standing up and push the trash in the can down to make more space

u/emotionaI_cabbage Nov 29 '22
Not anymore!

u/iiElysiumx Nov 29 '22
Thank the lord. I know a few people who compete in powerlifting and they were very happy about this change

u/Fun-Telephone-6238 Nov 29 '22
When you've seen priest after priest and none of the exorcisms worked. So you try to see if exercise will help.

Looks like they're in a school weight room... where's the strength trainer/coach that's supposed to be teaching them?

Ahhh yes, this is an old post. Happened at Grove City College while I was a student, where Freshmen had to take mandatory fitness classes.

That's a mupen press transitioning into a full nelson, solid move in the body building world.

u/mrprincepercy Nov 29 '22
I didn't realise it was the bench you are supposed to press.
