The shot of the teens leaving the Wheeler house on bikes transitioning to the older crew on bikes in the upside-down was so sweet. Wouldn’t have been a season of stranger things without people cycling somewhere with great purpose

Also the shot in the trailer where the people from both dimensions face each other. Portals have always been vertical until now so the effect is quite startling and really cool

A+ casting for the little boy to play Jamie Campbell's younger self.

When we first saw the kid a few episodes ago I thought his eyes looked a little weird and now it all makes sense. In hindsight that's such an obvious tell that they were the same person.

Max’s comment about Vecna targeting people with trauma marked Nancy for me… I thought Barb would appear to talk to her like Billy did with Max but when the shot cut to the swimming pool I was like oh shit that’s even worse

If Vecna wants previous trauma he’s gonna get a whole ass meal as soon as Will and El pass the ‘welcome to Hawkins’ sign

u/Cabamacadaf May 28 '22

It's weird that Nancy went straight into the trance though seemingly without having any visions prior to that.

This episode and Dear Billy are the two best episodes in the series, probably. I hope this isn’t recency bias but this was an absolute grand slam from the Duffer Brothers. Some people have felt like Stranger Things has become too crazy and exaggerated, but this episode was a clear reminder to me that these dudes know what they’ve been doing from the start. I hope we get some stuff that changes how we see seasons 2 and 3 as well.

It felt so suspicious when dad creel was recounting what happened to his family as the daughter was featured so much visually in his flashbacks while the son’s face was mostly hidden, but never guessed what he was lol. In retrospect it all makes sense and is done so well.

1.1k

u/AidanJLowe87 May 28 '22 edited May 28 '22

This is the scene which is the biggest hints early on & you were one who picked up on it, you'd have to pay close attention to the details.

When they enter the home the daughter is elated at being there and the son is rather a recluse in the background, the house being a hint in itself as most know as it's where present day Vecna resides in the Upside Down.

Even the father said during the recount: "A demon, closer than I'd realized.", "This demon, it seemed to take pleasure in tormenting us, even poor innocent Alice." The visual of a baby in a cot in flames & the line "I suppose all Evil must have a home."

All pointing to a problem child scenario.

And at the dinner table the son doesn't seem phased by the Mother dieing, the camera focuses on the daughter and when they try to escape he is static while the Father and daughter are distressed.

Also when he comes out of a trance the camera focuses on the daughter again & her missing eyes but doesn't show any injuries to the son & later the father mentions Henry (the son) went into a coma and died a week later which is what he would of been told as they "Brenner" would of carted him off to the Hawkins National Laboratory for experiments.

During the later episodes obviously it became a much clearer picture of who the antagonist really is, how he got there etc, the clues were all there before the reveals.

828

u/Diamond-Is-Not-Crash May 28 '22

It was a well written twist. Others on here pointed out back in ep 1 that it was unlikely that El killed everyone and that it was Vecna instead (my dumbass didn’t connect these dots for some reason) but the whole Vecna = 001 = Son Creel was the moment 001 asked El to escape, and then pretend to not want to and trick her into taking out what was most likely an inhibitor chip. I’ve consumed enough media to know when someone asks to do something they can’t do with no strings attached then you’re probs being tricks into unleashing a great evil or some shit. Also 001 would’ve been a child back in 59’ the same age the Creel son would’ve been. Shit, that was some good writing, well done the writers!

001 is flat out evil

968

u/Gamingaloneinthedark May 27 '22

Evil but he was telling the truth which not many else do to 11.

879

u/WassonX81X May 28 '22

I couldn't tell if he was telling the truth about Brenner letting the other kids kill 11 or if that was manipulation from him to get her to attempt the escape. It seems like current day Brenner actually kinda cares about her? But everything that 001 says to 11 about Brenner also makes sense. I don't know what to believe lol.

858

u/[deleted] May 29 '22

Just want to point out that 001 gave his little "your all just chess pieces" spiel while effortlessly beating 11 at chess, accusing Brenner of being a chessmaster when he clearly knows a thing or 2 about the game himself. He also has an evil monologue about how superior and unburdened by rules/morality he is. Take from that what you will.

I believe that since 11 has displayed both telepathy and memory reading, he was able to do the same at a young age. The combination of not having a fully developed brain, along with morals, while witnessing everything going on in the mind of his father who suffered from PTSD really messed him up.

i had an idea that Vecnor could be the Creal’s son because they said that he wasn’t killed like the rest of his family. And i was so suspicious of Jamie Campbell Bower and realised he was 1 when he showed eleven the chip in his neck (the scar looks like a 1). But idk why i didn’t make the connection that they were the same person sooner.

Also the implications of this are crazy. Eleven has so much power she was able to send 1 to another dimension she didn’t even know existed and everything that’s happened is a consequence of that.

I’m really afraid for all the characters tbh. They have to do some sort of big or impactful death and too many are giving me doom vibes.

Awesome ending. Vecna explaining his own creepy origins was phenomenal with the visuals.

Henry murdering his mother. Rewinding the clock. The rabbit. And oh the f**king spiders.

I love that El just simply said ‘no’ when he asked her to join him. Eleven is the best good egg. She’s gonna kick his ass… though I don’t think he’s going truly down until next season.

1.8k

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

Eleven is the hero. She’ll always be the hero. I literally knew it. I knew there was no way she could’ve killed everyone. Yet, in stopping One, she also created her own biggest enemy. Goddamn that entire sequence of Eleven remembering Terry’s voice and her first memory, of her finding the strength in love rather than anger, of her throwing One across the room and through the glass…damn it that was amazing. The score and everything really just accented what we’ve known all along: Eleven is the hero.

So 001 is not the Mind Flayer, but Vecna? Though the Mind Flayer resembling a spider may give way to an more intrinsic relationship between the two.

Also, does this season just cancelled out all the development of the rest of the numbers that the comics developed?

912

u/ArnosVale May 27 '22 Silver

I reckon the mind flayer and Vecna are two different beings, as one is a hive mind and one is basically human.

I think El literally tore a hole into another dimension that had an intelligent being there and yeeted 001 into it. The hive mind kept Vecna prisoner, and brought him out after a few unsuccessful attempts.

I could be way off, I'm literally basing this off the scene of the vines entering Vecnaa back, it looked like a symbiotic relationship to me.

868

u/WhiskeyxWhiskers May 28 '22 Silver

I think he was kept “prisoner” until El lost her powers. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he starts stalking and hunting until after she’s left powerless.

Edit: he was too much of a coward to present himself until now. El with no powers. he was scared of her. and if her powers are back, and she remembers this douche manipulating her and making her believe she’s a monster, she’s coming back with a vengeance. July 1st can’t come soon enough.

376

u/-PaperbackWriter- May 28 '22

I wonder if the mind flayer literally ‘stole’ her powers when it stabbed her in the leg and Vecna absorbed them, giving him the power to open gates

All of this plot twisting mind bending stuff that happened in S4 Volume 1, my main question is: What did Erica find under Lucas' bed?

294

u/hanxcer May 27 '22

porno stuff, no doubt. i think we saw a glimpse of it in one part of an episode.

I’m sorry but Steve’s completely chill reaction to Nancy having guns in her room while the other two were like WHAT was hysterical

637

u/IcecreamxSandwich May 29 '22

"There's a six year old in the house I know where I keep my guns" she says incredulously while opening a SHOEBOX.

218

u/chuckmilam Jun 02 '22

1980s gun storage safety was pretty much "put it on a high shelf, out of sight of the kids."

the fight between el and peter was the craziest thing i've ever watched. when the music started playing i literally started crying. and i knew that he was 001 AND vecna, but victor creel's son?? i finished the first volume one hour ago and i'm still shocked tbh

That has to be one of the best executed plot twists I've seen in a while. Even the people who had some parts of the puzzle already figured out were thrown for a loop

1.1k

u/conallkeenan May 27 '22

There's still a clip from the trailers in the Upside Down of Nancy that we haven't seen yet, so I think she's safe (At least from this immediate threat).

I LOVE Steve, but I just have a fear they're gonna kill him off. The ending of 6 leading into 7 I really thought for a moment they were actually gonna do it

"See you on the other side"

...Those are never words you want to speak in a piece of horror/thriller fiction.

881

u/cjm0 May 28 '22

i had a bad feeling that steve was gonna be the one to get left behind. like nancy would get through safe and then the portal would close before steve had a chance to follow. so it took me by surprise when nancy was the one who got possessed.

614

u/taeilor May 28 '22

i absolutely loved that they did that. obviously i want nancy to survive but the writers are definitely aware that everyone thinks that steve will be the one to die so to quickly save him and go "woops jk it's nancy in danger!" was just chefs kiss

Muri acting as yuri, mannerisms and all, is so fun to watch. Still have an hour left in the “finale” but Murray might be my mvp so far

Edit: muri was a typo but it works

542

Fun fact, he didn't know Russian before the show. They hired coaches to train him.

417

u/schneeleopard8 May 28 '22 edited May 29 '22

To be fair, his russian is still so bad that I as a russian speaker wouldn't understand anything if it wasn't for the subtitles.

297

u/PM_ME_WHT_PHOSPHORUS May 29 '22

Sure sure, but that fits his character. Murray is kind of a hack, high energy kinda dude. I'd definitely see him learning Russian, and able to speak it, but with such a god awful American accent.

Orrr I dunno get his black belt with 13 yr olds lmao

It was so good seeing a Demogorgan on a proper budget. You could tell from that long take of it fucking shit up that they had a lot of pent up ideas to let loose after being limited in the first season.

402

u/Colossal89 May 28 '22

That thing is still on the loose right? It basically will tear up the entire prison.

u/Megavore97 May 28 '22 edited May 28 '22 Helpful

My bet is that it chases Hopper, Joyce, Murray and Yuri to the church; and then they use Yuri’s flamethrower to kill it.

425

u/DeadeyeDuncan May 29 '22

Chekhov's flamethrower.

But its not really all of threat that it was established as having in S1 if conventional weapons can actually kill it, so it would be a bit of a cop out. It took El to kill one last time.

I’m guessing that was an intentional cliffhanger. I hope our girl is okay

294

u/aldezar May 28 '22

I am thinking she will be okay - only because her 'capture' by Vecna was an opportunity to get some exposition and truths that she now knows - she will need to relay that back to the group I think, so she will get out of there.

Okay, that was fucking PHENOMENAL. Perfect place to split the season (although it’ll be torture waiting for the last two episodes) and I truly have no clue what’s going to happen next. I’m guessing episode 8 will involve El and the California crew regrouping as she makes it out of Nina, with episode 9 featuring the entire team reuniting? I don’t know, but episodes 4 and 7 were handsdown AMAZING.

Questions I still have:

1- Was the Upside Down a place that already existed and El just imprisoned 001 in it? Or did she create it in that moment?

2- If she created it, does that then mean that 001 somehow created all the other beings in the UD? That’s in contrast with what Dustin says (he considers Vecna a general for the MF), and we’re reminded repeatedly here that nobody ever listens to him but he’s always right.

3- In general, just really need answers about the UD and it’s provenance. I can’t quite decide whether I think they were trying to tell us this meant El created it or not (although I’m guessing we’ll get some clarifications as interviews post this weekend)

4- Additionally, about the UD: what’s up with time? So it’s currently stuck in the night Will went missing. Is it stuck there or does time simply move slower? If it’s stuck there, why is it THAT DAY? I would’ve understood if it was stuck on the day El vanquished 001 there, but definitely not. SO MANY QUESTIONS

5- Lastly, why is 001 awake NOW? What has he been up to all this time and what’s caused him to kick off his latest killing spree now?

801

u/KausGo May 27 '22

Here are my theories.

  1. The alternate dimension already existed, but as a wasteland. El creating it seems like too much. But once One got there, he reformed it to look like Hawkins.
  2. Dustin might be wrong on this one. Given that the UD was a wasteland before and Vecna seems connected to the bat creatures, I think he created all the monsters there. The MindFlayer is his most powerful creation and he made it look like his favorite creature - spider.
  3. The Hawkins in UD is a copy of the real Hawkins created by Vecna. First, he'd have made it as he remembered. And then he updated it when El opened the gate for the second time - the day Will disappeared.
  4. I'd say Vecna was always awake, but did not act directly because it did not want to engage El directly - given she beat him before. He tried to open the gate using other monsters and get rid of El in the process. He is acting now because El apparently lost her powers.

I saw someone questioning why Eleven was able to overpower 001/Vecna. To me it seems obvious it was because she didn't do what he had taught her and found the strength in a negative memory that made her angry. But she instead thought of a positive memory of her mother, which gave her more strength than 001's way of finding strength in evil and darkness. Pretty typical light vs dark trope but I feel like it works really well here. Did someone interpret it differently?

460

u/weridzero May 28 '22

Definitely, and Vecna probably doesn’t know about positive memories being more powerful cause he literally has none

515

u/cudipi May 29 '22

It also parallels with him facing max. When she faced him she was able to escape only by remembering the good times she had with her friends and found strength in that.

The power of love is strong this season

147

u/[deleted] May 28 '22

I needed a scene of Max cussing out Callahan for acting like he’s smart and Powell trying to diffuse the tension, but also it makes sense that they took Max out of the scene for Dustin and Lucas to explain stuff to Erica. They’re one half of the OG S1 kids (ya know, Mike, El, Lucas, and Dustin), so it’s really neat that they’re the ones explaining this to Erica, who serves as the surrogate audience.

657

i think pacing wise they were getting too close to the boys finding eleven, so they just had them take a backseat for an episode while they let eleven finish her story. their story just isn’t as high stakes as the others too, so it would be kinda weird to have in the last episode unless they upped the stakes a lot. did miss them though!

They either brought Eddie in as a character to make us LOVE so we will adapt better when they kill Steve, or they brought us Eddie for us to love and be ripped to shreds when he dies. 🥲 no way him and Steve are both surviving I don’t think. I am depressed. I don’t want either of them to go tbh.

After watching this, it's made me think...

Is it possible Kali was helped by 001/Vecna to escape though? It might explain how in S2 Kali was trying to manipulate Eleven by saying her mother "wanted them to be together", the "papa" visual mind tricks (which 001/Vecna used on his victims like Chrissy and her Mother, Max seeing Billy, etc; and how to use anger to move that bus (001/Vecna was telling El to do that with the disc dropper to use that anger). And don't forget, she could make people see black widow spiders - coincidence? She could very much play a big role going forward and connect in with the gaps of the story.
