damn they really got me feeling like shit for billy

Yeah I was actually really sad when he died and I very much didn't expect that.

2.2k

u/LaneToGlory Jul 05 '19

They’re great at that. It’s one of the biggest strengths of the show. These character arcs that are so overwhelmingly convincing. Steve from season 1 to now is a completely different character and it doesn’t feel forced at all. It feels earned. The writing really shines when it comes to challenging our perception of these characters.

1.0k

u/sloganharry23 Jul 06 '19

Agreed. Every time I see a clip of Steve from Season 1 now I'm reminded how much I used to hate his guts. Now he's my favorite character. Also really happy with what they did with him and Robin this season. The entire time you see them throughout the season you're like "they're obviously going to end up together by the end" only for her to reveal that she's gay and make your heart sink for Steve just like his did after he told her he liked her. My dude just can't catch a break when it comes to love haha

831

Bruh Joyce can’t catch a break at all 😂

303

u/sloganharry23 Jul 06 '19

Joyce at least had mutual love before. Steve loved Nancy who turned out never really loved him back and then fell for a lesbian. Don't get me wrong Bob and Hopper were both tragic but at least she had a relationship with Bob at least to remember him by. All Steve has ever had was being shot down lol

It’s kinda crazy how Alexei went from seeming like an uncooperative Russian asshole to someone who was childish at heart.

Yeah my eyes got teary when Alexei died and he wasn't even in it for three seasons!! Great writing of that character and great acting!

Not mention he only had speaking lines in 3 episodes, and they were the next to last episodes of the season (when you’ve got a lot more important stuff going) yet all I cared about was Alexei and his woody woodpecker.

As soon as I saw he was recruiting people for the Mind Flayer, I was hoping he'd bring his Dad. I mentioned in a previous comment that one of my hopes for this season is that he'll confront his dad or that his dad will be done in. But the scenes at the beach were nice dives into his backstory outside of him getting slapped and yelled at by his dad.

I teared up a bit when he told Max he was sorry before he died. He sacrificed himself and I'm glad he was redeemed in a way.

988

u/Helios1295 Jul 04 '19

I felt heartbroken even before all that. It's the scene where he was trapped in the sauna and he was saying sorry to max. I'm not sure if it was the mindflayer or really him but i want to think that it was him as that was his real personality despite his tough act. Like when he got threathen by his dad in season 2, he was scared shit.

838

u/DoubleStrength Jul 04 '19

Will's Spider-sense didn't go off until after Billy apologised to Max in the sauna, so I definitely think that was him speaking (even though it would 100% be something the mind flayer would try and pull as well).

And the part where billy sacrificed himself? I know he’s a total piece of shit but that hit me harder than the car hit those commies

862

u/LSunday Jul 04 '19

The thing that hurts about Billy to me is that even though he hadn’t found redemption, all of the evidence pointed that if he had survived he would have become a good person as a result of these events, even if he was awful beforehand.

127

u/nick2473got Finger-lickin good Jul 06 '19

he would have become a good person

i don't know if we can go that far.

Realistically, somehow who became a bully due to severe trauma and abuse is unlikely to be magically cured of their issues by experiencing even more trauma and realizing they are responsible for dozens of deaths.

It's not like you can just flip a switch and become a good person.

He might have made an effort to be better out of guilt, but he probably would still have been hella fucked up.

The ending made me tear up - growing up is shown beautifully in my opinion. Nothing was in your face, message was clear.

Great last episode to a great season (liked it more than season 2 tbh)

Edit: Guys I watched the last end credit scene (I never leave an episode unfinished). Hop probably has plot armor. I personally still think the ending of him dying stands until he’s revealed as alive. So still RIP Hopper, Billy, and Alexei.

Am I the only one hoping that the scene after the credits points that Hopper is still alive? In the prison the russians said "No, not the American." Or are these just stupid hopes?

1.0k

u/theedqueen Jul 04 '19

That's what I'm hoping for. They don't show hopper actually being dead dead, they just show the laser thing exploding. Kinda like how El just disappeared at the end of season 1. So I'm guessing he got sucked into the upside down and somehow made his way out using the gate they were trying to open in Russia.

502

u/icyflames Jul 05 '19

Or the machine exploding didn't kill them but just transported them somewhere else where another one of those machines had been set up.

221

u/newsfish Jul 05 '19

Or the Russians figured out how to quick travel via the upside down; a team sent to find out why Hawkins stopped responding discovered a sealed door and an injured Hopper.

299

u/bookschocolatebooks Jul 05 '19

Surely this is pretty obvious, given when the armed response arrived there was no sign of the Russians? They must have had another way out, presumably using the upside down.

I don't care how realistic it is or how much it would ruin story arcs; they better bring back goddamn Hopper. I will not stand for this even if it was the best season of ST. We never saw the body so he has to be. If he was dead the shock of seeing the body would be too good of an emotional got punch for them to miss out on.

481

u/AJAnimosity Jul 04 '19

Yes. In season 2 it was stated Brenner is still alive by her, and El wanted to go after him but chose Hawkins instead.

I feel the American can only be Brenner. How else did the Russians find out about the gate, and it being in Hawkins. That covers the gap very well.

Was the gate at the end fully closed? The crack still had some orange glow, and if the theory is true that Hop jumped into the gate; wouldn’t the whole “keep the door open 3 inches for me” become some super sweet foreshadowing? Idk

Edit: I definitely agree with folks below that the gate in Hawkins had to have closed because the Mind Flayer died.

But that Demogorgon being around is definitely leading me to believe that the connection hasn’t been severed, I think S4 is going to be about Eleven saving Hopper

Can we talk about how beautiful El’s exchange with Billy was?

Fireworks going off in the background, she looked death in the face and brought his humanity out. Billy’s face slowly relaxing as he recalled the image of his mother with the flashbacks was phenomenal acting.

To be possessed (?) for several days and have the virus ripped from you, to then immediately stand and face the thing that possessed you to defend your sister and her friends must require the biggest balls.

Billy had one of the greatest redemptions I’ve ever seen in a show/movie.

He ended up being the best actor in the entire show, out of nowhere. Dude managed to look menacing as fuck, while also showing his human side, Billie, trapped inside that thing.. tears rolling down his face, while the Mind Flayer speaks through him about killing everyone. Dacre was sensational, from start to end.

But Winona, David Harbour and Millie.. they all delivered too. Millie was insane this season.

226

I watched it- entirely captivated and when that tear dropped I almost lost my mind. SO incredibly talented. What a touch to include. Suddenly, you understand that Billy is in there, and he's terrified and sad. God DAMN. Give this man his fucking award already.

Harbour... Idk what he was doing. But he did it well. It was just a bit off. I did enjoy the stuff with him and Finn though that was great. Crazy eyes.

Millie is so impressive!!!! Dacre says in an interview that she can meet him wherever he's at. David Harbour has said the same thing. She's 14? Impressive. So so impressive.

He’s a very talented singer in real life, he started out in the entertainment industry doing Broadway musicals. To me, that scene felt so pure because it felt specifically written in so he could show those talents, which I just love. I can picture the production team and the cast wanting Gaten to do the scene because they support him as a person, not just his character and wanted to allow him to bring some of his passion and talent for singing to the audience. I’m glad he got to be a hero even if it was just for one day.

Now I’m sad. Did anyone else catch the after credits scene?

985

u/DeusSauce Jul 04 '19

Is the American supposed to be hopper?

1.2k

u/XGamestar Jul 04 '19

My guess is that he jumped into the gate and somehow ended up at one of the Russian sites. There were a lot of gruesome deaths this season, and Stranger Things isn't shy about showing main and secondary characters dying. We didn't see Hopper die, even though he was standing right next to the machine when it exploded, and they showed those Russian dudes getting evaporated.

It might come off as cheapening his sacrifice, but I think Hopper is still alive and is "The American" they refer to in the credits scene.

648

u/CSEnzley Coffee and Contemplation Jul 05 '19 edited Jul 07 '19

If you freeze frame you'll notice Hopper is already missing from the scene before it explodes.

Before it starts disintegrating people.

EDIT:

It's immediately after Joyce turns the keys. Followed by a 6 second cut to black. It's a quick moment.

It could be a simple oversight in post OR it could be for a reason.

If we rewatch in the future we will be paying more attention so they could also be thinking ahead.

EDIT 2:

I also think Dr. Brenner is working (or being forced to work) with the Russians in their projects. Makes sense for him to want to escape after the exposure brought forth by Nancy and Murray.

So, if Hopper is a prisoner he could find Brenner working with them and Season 4 could be a rescue mission. Hopper is a link to Eleven after all. Brenner could still want her and for good reason.

Not to mention El's loss of power suddenly. If she still had it she could have easily found him. Too convenient. As well as all the emphasis on leaving the door open 3-inches.

EDIT 3:

I went back to the first episode, when it shows the Russians activating it, and they intentionally shot the man stepping over the mess of what used to be a human being after being hit by it. The final shot when Joyce is looking at where Hopper is standing is clean. Nothing.

See my recent post for way more detail

Yeah. I’m curious who the “American” was that they were talking about. As for the Demigorgon, I’m curious how this is going to play into the boys, and their town. Unless ST4 goes international.

164

u/creyk Jul 04 '19 edited Jul 04 '19

The demogorgon has all sorts of strange implications. Did they manage to tame it? There is no reason why some metal should keep those things constrained, based on what we have seen so far it should be able to break out of the cell and wreak havoc all over town.

118

u/PM_ME_DND_FIGURINES Jul 04 '19

Better question, with the gate closed, how is it even alive?

129

u/darkmessenger84 Dustin Jul 04 '19

I suspect that at some point the soviets successfully opened a gate of their own in Kamchatka before the Hawkins gate was closed.

Despite not being totally convinced Hopper’s really dead, eleven’s reactions made me cry. Amazing acting by Millie. Millie was AWESOME in general this season. Super impressed by her.

388

u/gf120581 Jul 05 '19

They rightfully put her front and center this season and having her back with her friends brought out the best in her. You got the wonderful new friendship with Max and plenty of good stuff with Mike, not just the usual sweet and emotional moments you expect from the pair, but also funny stuff. It was great that they played their first fight mainly for comedy.

Transitioning between friends and schools, first kisses, making new friends and the awkward phase between people caught in the past and not accepting their future. I realized how far I’ve come and how thankful I am to this show for helping me feel that again. Til the next season lads

I think it made a lot more sense, because this was the season when she learned what's been going on for the past two years. It's easy to act like a brat when you're not aware of the outside world, and Hawkins is a really scary place to be, besides. The absolute joy on her face at getting the D&D books proves that she's going to become a more integral part of the group.

Imagine being Robin. You find out Russians have a secret base under your mall and then you get caught, drugged and after saved by a couple of kids. Then shit you can't even wrap your head around starts happening. Telekinesis is real then you are being chased by a gargantuan flesh demon whilst some love bird kids are singing to each other. I hope she is a full part of the group next season.

3 best moments of this season all in the last half of the episode. Dustin's singing with Susie and everyone's reaction was priceless. Lucas mocking Dustin's song with Dustin looking on was amazing. But damn the letter from hopper with we can be heroes playing right after...

u/CallMeHollywood Steve Jul 05 '19 Silver

Loved the scene with Mike and Eleven outside the mall. 'I dump your ass' lmao

702

u/gf120581 Jul 04 '19

It's not only funny, it pretty much put to rest any worries that Mike and El would have serious problems this season. It's their first spat. Two episodes later their back in each other's arms again. It was basically played for comedy. Also this:

"You were spying on me? That's against the rules!"

"I make my own rules."

489

u/khaleesi469 Blank makes you crazy Jul 04 '19

Also:

"Well they do say it makes you crazy" "What?" "What? You've never heard the phrase? Blank makes you crazy?" "Girlfriends?"

320

u/gf120581 Jul 04 '19

Yes, that whole scene was adorable.

"It's something old people sometimes say to each other."

And of course Dustin interrupts. Nice callback to S1 there.

u/khaleesi469 Blank makes you crazy Jul 04 '19

Hopper totally stepped through the doorway. I refuse to believe he’s dead. Next season will be rescuing him.

539

u/DoubleStrength Jul 04 '19

He was eyeing the gate up the whole time. No way is Hopper the kind of guy who'd just stand there and die when he knows he's got an out, no matter how risky the option might be.

475

u/toddthefrog Jul 04 '19

If they don’t show the death, he ain’t dead. Time and time again this has proven true in tv shows since time immemorial. Hopper ain’t dead.

I have questions. How do the Russians have a Demogorgan? If the gate is closed then the Demogorgan should be dead, shouldn't it? And, if its still open then why did the giant monster in the mall die? Wasn't the Demogorgan also a part of the Mind Flayers army? Shouldn't the entire army die then?

202

u/creyk Jul 04 '19

It's important to note 3 months passed. They had the technology to open the gate, they probably just improvd it a bit to be able to find a spot in their country where they can open it up and experiment with it. It's so disturbing they are playing with fire like that though.

Using the word as seriously as possible, that was traumatic. Hopper's death was one half, but the goodbye between Eleven and Mike felt equal to me. It felt very final and a goodbye to youth. To being kids. (que the song). "We're not kids anymore." And ultimately that was the theme even if Mike didn't truly realize the extent of it when he said it early on. After watching it, I feel pained and can relate to the loss of innocence and youth and not realizing just how big the world truly is. They all felt that. Max. Joyce. Mike. Eleven.

473

u/gf120581 Jul 04 '19

Excuse me, what the fuck?

In all seriousness though, calling it now. Hopper isn't the American, but ends up being in the upside down. They know the implications of that scene and that line, most people are going to expect it to be Hopper. And half of them will be pissed when it's not. The only way to play that and keep most happy is a gut-wrenching reveal of Brenner or someone with the Soviets and then a redemption later in S4 with Hopper coming back.

If Hopper were truly dead, they would never have alluded to that line, but it's also way too straightforward to be it.

I hope late next year, but a lot will depend on what date they choose. This season easily could have come out earlier but they wanted the 4th of July setting for obvious reasons.

276

u/creyk Jul 04 '19

Very true. I kind of thought it would be cool if next season came out around christmas - new year's eve 2020 because that is a big enough break and also Mike said that Eleven and Will could visit during Christmas if Joyce agrees, and the events of seasons usually happen in a matter of days so it could work out.
