I swear to God I don't remember the last time I laughed this hard at something. That stupid ass throw was like something out of a Coen movie and I'm not gonna lie, I had to rewind it twice to appreciate it in all its demented glory.

I love that they did that tho. Because every time they do an important item throw in the and movies it's always this perfect toss and catch. I would absolutely just chuck and end up missing

Love how Steve’s spent this whole season in a sailors outfit lol

AND HE WON A FIGHT

653

u/DeathEater9876 Jul 04 '19

I also love how we’ve only seen Will, Johnathan, Max and Dusty in their house only once this season.

456

u/CheesyStealieTribe Jul 05 '19

I love it too. Really emphasizing the whole summer adventure angle

161

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

Really makes you feel better about the Byers house. I know it's all "We're selling it!" so far, but at least it's being left alone so far. No holes in walls, no christmas lights or weird map thing everywhere. For once it gets to not suffer.

I realized just how ridiculous he looked when they got out of the elevator and you could see the full outfit.

I couldn't stop laughing at the thought of how silly it would be if you were a russian guard in a secret base and you came across this teenager dressed like popeye.

This entire season has nailed the horror. They weren’t kidding when they said this one was dark.

It was so gross the way those two Hawkins Post guys melted down and formed the goop monster. Really gnarly stuff and the visual fx company really nailed making it look as realistic as possible

354

u/_____monkey Jul 05 '19

You could see the occasional bone in the goopy mess, which really sold it for me. And I swear, the one on Nancy's side of the hallway, it looked like his foot was still somewhat formed as it was slithering down the hallway. Awesomely gross!

At a glance, Alexei is a dude with a job like anyone else. He's a scientist and what is in Hawkins is an incredible phenomenon to study. In the Soviet state this stuff was considered a great honor. Plus, they likely have no idea what the Mind Flayer is up to or capable of. Like the American scientists in the first two seasons, the Russians consider the Upside Down an asset to be studied or harnessed.

149

u/rzyua Jul 05 '19

I think they might want to use it to destroy the US.

The only other reasons to do it on American soil I can think of are

  • They don't want to do it in Russia because it's risky, but then any other country in the world would work just as well
  • Hawkins is the only (known) place where it can be done

Come to think of it the last one seems the most plausible.

148

u/Amon_The_Silent Jul 06 '19

The first scene of the season shows them drilling in Russia and failing, so this is probably them trying where they know there's already been a breach.

Seriously, best plan for the next season is for the person who finds something to alert everyone, then have everyone go on in split groups like normal, just with constant updates over radio.

263

u/Weewer Jul 05 '19

Ahhh but that's just not how ST operates. Every season is disconnected plotlines that meet up and you feel satisfied when they do.

49

u/die-ursprache Jul 06 '19

You know, I really like this, because Joyce in seasons 2&3 always reminded me of Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. Sarah didn't care that the whole world thought she was crazy, she still put her bed sideways everyday and trained, trained, trained in preparation for what to come. She already experienced some weird shit and she was ready to do it again.

Joyce doesn't do much in terms of building hueg mooscles, but it's the same mindset. She doesn't give a fuck if everyone calls her batshit crazy, she's already been through terrible things and she firmly accepts them as part of her personal reality.

Excuse me but what the honest fuck is happening. We got Russians and we got mind flayer doing...mindflayer things.

215

u/random24 Jul 04 '19

The Russians are pretty clearly working on some sort of weapon (the way the US did in season 1 via MK Ultra). The mindflayer is well... the mindflayer.

130

u/Shulerbop Jul 04 '19

Is it a weapon, though? They seem to be trying to open up their own gate, but didn’t know the Americans used psychics.

The giant laser thing seemed to be capable of wrecking shit back in Russia, but couldn’t open the gate unless it was at the Hawkins DOE site.

62

u/Jay_Train Jul 04 '19

Which is interesting, because it was kind of sort of the other way around IRL. Read/watch The Men Who Stare at Goats. We started psychic research because the Russians thought we already were doing it, which made them do it, which made us do it.

Man this season has such a different dynamic. Idk how to describe it but it’s like this season is it’s own miniseries. At first I thought it started out kinda mainstream and cliches but it def got better lol

See, I really like what they've done with Jonathan and Nancy.

Their temporary breakup informed their characters. They had a legit conflict: Jonathan doesn't understand what it's like being a working woman in the 1980s, and Nancy doesn't understand what it's like being working class and supporting your own mother. And the source of their conflict is directly related to the main plot of the season. Their plotline ties into all the other.

Literally none of that applies to the dumb shit they've been dragging out with Mike and El for the past 5 goddam hours.

There were definitely some The Shining vibes in that last scene in the hospital with Nancy and Jonathan. Also GODDAMNIT WHY WOULD YOU JUST STAND THERE AND WATCH IT TRANSFORM, RUN YOU IDIOTS lmao

So the mayor talking about this dude being Arnold Schwarzenegger was NOT fucking around huh?

Also, that shot of Nancy hiding, with the extinguisher with one tear rolling down her cheek was fucking unreal.

The flayer in other seasons: dark, shadowy being that is evil incarnate

This season: “let’s get nasty”

Most impressive thing about this (and some of the previous) episode is how crisp is russian! Actors speak correctly, with almost no accent.

Seriously, its impressive. Usually russian talk is either complete gibberish, or has horrible accent (or both, like in John Wick)

u/Mellon__Collie Jul 05 '19

I saw a bunch or Russian names in the credits so I assume all the russian characters are played by legit russians

That must have been so cathartic for Nancy to bash in the face of the guy who embarassed the fuck out of her because she forgot the mustard.

Found an Anachronism! In the lobby they split a bag of M&M’s... when they pour them out there is a red one! But red was gone from 1976 to 1987, and that ep was in 1985. It should have been light brown.

A small thing I have noticed but appreciated from the writers:

I like how despite Nancy and Steve breaking up, the writers managed to allowed both to remain pivotal characters to the storyline while also being realistic about them not hanging out/still being a big part of each others lives. I always get annoyed when 2 main characters on a TV show break up and act like it never happened except for a few jokes here and there as to not mess up the dynamic of things. Here, it feels like a real breakup, and you never see Steve and Nancy interact (although I think they will eventually share a scene together before the season is over)

I'm halfway through this episode and I am knocked out by the craftsmanship of this season. The detail. The clever throwaways and callbacks.

And the story is really effing good so far. Completely fresh while paying effective homage to not only an entire fleeting era, but multiple film genres, all while re-doing season 1 in a way that feels jovial without mocking, and completely lacking in cynicism while holding up a new and interesting lens through which to view our current era.

I'm really blown away. I was expecting a steep decline in quality; the sets, fashion and soundtrack are more than enough to keep me coming back.

I'm not even going to start about the character development and surprising acting skills from the b characters because I will go on all day.
