He’s also the red ranger. The movie might not have been amazing, but he was solid.

The thing is the movie wasn't great but the cast was actually pretty solid and he led the way.

I don’t think there’s any coming back from the infection, he seems too far gone. Plus his name starts with a B, and we all know what happens to people whose names start with a B.

Dacre Montgomery has a great career ahead of him. Also, somewhat unrelated, but if Netflix ends up doing a Percy Jackson series sometime soon, they should definitely cast him as Luke.

179

Hold up, is a Percy Jackson series just something you're hoping for, or is there rumours going around?

This season summed up in one shot lol

679

u/kodaandorion Jul 04 '19

It’s called a Dutch Angle and used to create unease and tension! It’s a clever shot that needs to be used at the right moments, and this worked so well!

205

u/Imperial3agle Jul 04 '19

Yeah. So many film makers use the Dutch Angle way too much or not at all. It has to be used perfectly and it was in this episode.

Their reaction when Nancy said "I get it from dad" 😂😂

282

u/Orimasuta Jul 04 '19

Honestly thought she was genuine at first, and was gonna make Mrs. Wheeler remember why she fell in love in the first place.

193

u/theimmortalcrab Jul 05 '19

Like Nancy said in I think season 2, I don't think Karen and Ted ever were in love. I think Karen just wanted a reliable husband to start a family with, and a good income and nice home, and him providing that was enough to make up for the not-exactly-sparks-flying romance.

120

u/esportprodigy Jul 07 '19

the guy made 6 figures in the 1980s in a small town

51

u/leeloo200 Jul 08 '19

Yeah when they said he made 6 figures I was like "holy shit this family is rich". For comparison my dad was making I think around $35K at that time and we weren't too bad off.

55

u/raouldukesaccomplice #BarbLivesMatter Jul 08 '19 Gold

Karen and Ted's marriage is pretty reflective of what you saw in a lot of Baby Boomer marriages at that time.

Given the age of their oldest child, they probably got married some time in the mid 1960s, around the time that the US was undergoing a lot of cultural changes and women were gaining more legal and social rights.

The divorce rate in the US went up in the 1970s and 1980s. There are a lot of causes of this but one of them is the theory that a lot of people got married under the "old" conception of what marriage was supposed to be (husband works; wife takes care of house; they both focus on their respective duties, not on their personal fulfillment). Then, marriage started becoming redefined as primarily about two people being happy and making each other happy (as "soul mates"). A lot of people whose marriages worked under the old cultural norms weren't going to work under these new norms, so they divorced. (Divorce laws were also liberalized at this time, removing another obstacle.)

Hawkins has got a fancy-ass pool complex with a weight room and sauna.

383

I think they retconned Hawkins this season to be a waaay bigger town than it was in Season 1 and 2.

One that can support a big pool complex and a giant mall.

It was the fancy restaurant with the live string quartet that pushed my suspension of belief really.

451

Who ever owns that booth should be angry, both there employees are running off trying to find russians instead of slinging scoops.

328

And apparently there is no management or anyone else that works there. Definitely the 80s!

265

u/invisiblecows Jul 05 '19

I honestly love that we haven't seen a manager in the ice cream place yet. The Steve / Dustin / Robin scenes are giving me flashbacks to when I worked in an ice cream shop as a teenager, and I literally only saw the owner once. It was just teens hanging out all day, scooping ice cream and getting up to shenanigans.

Little touches of accuracy like that are what make this show so freaking nostalgic.

The lack of Dustin in the party is unnatural. I love his dynamic with Steve and Robin but Will was right. The party is fracturing.

539

u/creyk Jul 04 '19

Friends grow apart. It happens. But maybe if we complain enough they will put the 4 of them together in season 4 since the show creators always took fan feedback into account so far.

529

u/KodenATL Jul 04 '19

Well don't forget that El wasn't reunited with the party until the very end of the penultimate episode last season. Every season, the groups get split into side quests that meet up for the ending.

198

u/RahulBhatia10 Grrrr Jul 04 '19

This season feels more united overall though. I think just having it start with the group all together set it up to be like that which I love. They are on separate plotlines and paths but are very close in their separate investigations for most of the season

635

279

u/RahulBhatia10 Grrrr Jul 04 '19

Holy shit yeah and her tearing up to when possessed Billy was faking being all regretful for his actions. It really shows that she obviously still feels empathy for him as her step brother.

467

u/_Comic_ Clarke Jul 05 '19

I don't think he was faking.

As someone pointed out to me earlier, Will's Spidey-Sense doesn't tingle until after that part of the Sauna Test, indicating that the Mind Flayer wasn't "active" yet inside Billy. I think that makes it even more heart-breaking, Billy knows there's something evil controlling him but he's completely helpless.

142

u/PrettyPunctuality Jul 05 '19

Yep, I very much disliked Billy going into this season (I say dislike, because it's not hate; I get why he is the way he is), but god, even I teared up at that part. It was so well-acted, too.

This show does a great job at taking characters I don't like and turning them around into sympathetic characters who I end up changing my opinion about. Billy is definitely going to be that character for me this season if he survives past this season somehow.

When they said we were going to get more Steve and Dustin this season, wasn’t expecting Dustin to be apart from his party for this long.

47

u/Lmb1011 Jul 04 '19

They'll probably merge the stories in the last 2-3 epiaodes much like how El didn't rejoin the group until the end of season 2. As much as I hate Dustin being away from the group, I get why he wants to be (feels abandoned by them) and it serves a secondary purpose of getting another part of the Mystery being focused on, so when everyone DOES reconvene they all have different portions of the puzzle.

I liked that they showed the group is still reaching out to Dustin tho, that they do want him around. Eventually they'll reunite!

THAT SAUNA SCENE. Just wanna say, shout out to Mike and Lucas for stepping up and fighting back during that Sauna scene. Lucas coming through with the bullseye assist with the wrist rocket and Mike coming through with the pipe to help El. It was a nice change to see Mike actually physically get involved in a fight.

Also, anyone get Return of the Joker vibes when Mike was luring Billy into the sauna? Reminded me of Terry laughing at the Joker for some reason.

I just sobbed during Will’s breakdown. I know how it feels when your friends are growing up and you’re not ready to. And I thought Mike was going to be a jerk, and he was but he instantly felt bad. Which is classic Mike.

u/sovietcop Jul 04 '19

I interpreted him as also finally processing or releasing all that trauma that happened to him. It's like he was really happy with his friends, had this really horrible thing happen to him, and now he's back but all his friends have kinda changed and experienced different things and everything is different and he's just left to deal with all this loss

121

u/serenaiguess Jul 04 '19

Oh definitely. It was refreshing to see him get angry like that though, we’ve never really seen him show any kind of emotion after what happened to him. Like we saw him scared and sad obviously, but not angry like that.

This scene between Nancy and her mum is so cute. It’s so nice to see some more character development for her mum, given that she is pretty highly billed after all being in the opening title sequence.

226

u/creyk Jul 04 '19

I was hoping someone would mention this. In the first 2 seasons Mrs. Wheeler was always portrayed as a not so great mom even though she was really trying, her children just didn't communicate with her. But she is there for her family when they finally decide to turn to her.

That sauna scene was the scariest shit I’ve seen in years. Knowing that any of the characters could have died scared the shit out of me.

Love the horror camera work in this episode. Also with Heather's Dad/Newspaper Man kicking the desk in frustration and the camera shifting at an angle for the remainder of the scene.

I feel bad for Nancy and Jonathan. Both have legitimate points, he comes from a broken home and no money and the pressure he must feel to succeed so that he can provide and be better, and the horrible sexism she must feel, something I know I cannot relate to so I can only imagine how horrible it must feel.

They both did fantastic acting.

Characters like Kline who hold power but are so corrupt always make such compelling villains. Real life scumbags can be just as nasty as mind flayers.

Jonathon has a good point imo. 🤔

They’re just interns, her job really is just to fetch food and work her way up.

635

u/Delanium Jul 04 '19

I actually really like that conflict, because they both have valid grievances. Jonathan faces obstacles from being poor, and Nancy faces discrimination from being a woman, ESPECIALLY in the 80s. But I think ultimately, Nancy is in the wrong here for dragging Jonathan into it.

287

u/CheesyStealieTribe Jul 04 '19

Yeah that conflict was very interesting. The last lines in the car she says "you just don't get it" and he replies "neither do you"

Nancy doesn't understand the struggles of being poor and having to work for everything and Johnathan doesn't understand the struggles of being a woman in the workplace in the 80's and not being taken seriously whatsoever. One of those situations where you don't have to know how one another feels, you just need to be there for them
