Also not the lady’s first time as the ‘sprayer’ judging by how cool she was…

447

u/StreetGlassShower Aug 13 '22

He stabbed her purse with a large knife and she didn't even get up. I think she's been around the block once or twice.

70

u/trplOG Aug 13 '22

Honestly I was thinking.. not her first time getting mugged.. everything was so fuckin casual lol.

32

u/angstyart Aug 14 '22

Probably because he was harassing her even earlier than the video and she knew no one in the damn restaurant would help her.

I have family in Cartagena, Colombia.
She works for a office in the district, and drives a (nice) car.

She carries two bags, one decoy with a dummyphone and a wallet with a few Peso's ( enough for a coffee )
The other one she carries under her clothes ( passport, phone and wallet/cards ).

There are 100's of moto's on the streets, few of them are checking every car and calling marks to the rest of the crew.
Passenger window is mostly rolled down, and the decoy in front of the passenger's seat ( floor )
At least 2 or 3 times a year the door is yanked open, en the purse is taken.
If there is no purse, or to difficult to get it, they use force and sometimes weapons.
She carries pepperspray in ALL of het jackets, just because of harassment in the streets.

28

u/--_-Deadpool-_-- Aug 13 '22 edited Aug 13 '22

Is carrying a passport on your person a common thing in Colombia?

9

u/whymauri Aug 13 '22

It's not a passport, he's probably referring to the Cedula. Essentially, an SSN card.

A few weeks ago I was going into the gas station and this old homeless dude was out front. It was hot as fuck, like dangerously hot. He didn’t say shit to me on the way in. I got my stuff and also got a big bottle of gatorade and a couple of waters for the guy. So when I went back out he asked me if I had a couple of bucks, and I said no I don’t, but take this stuff cuz it’s hot as fuck outside. He got all bitchy about it, saying “That’s not what I asked for” and acted annoyed with me. Then he tried to look in the bag to see if it was anything he wanted. But I was like hell no and didn’t give it to him. Just trying to look out for his old ass, and he has a shitty attitude about it. Sorry gramps, I’m not giving you money so you can drink malt liquor and get a heat stroke. If you have to ask strangers for money outside the gas station, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit, but if you do then you don’t get shit.

Had a dude in Memphis walk up to me while I was pumping gas and give me a sob story about how he was trying to get to the hospital to see his 1st child and he ran out of gas and just got it to the pump before it shut itself off. I told him I felt for him but I was using the last of my own money to get gas in my car and payday was tomorrow, so I didn't have any money. I felt pretty bad until dude got PISSED and told me I could go fuck myself and I wasn't giving him any money because I was racist. Anyways, long story short, he walked back to his car while still cursing me up and down, started it up and drove off down the highway. Shit like that makes me skeptical of people who genuinely need money

Had a teen approach me at a McDonalds drive thru in a rough area and thought to myself wrong place to beg for money when Im ordering off the dollar menu. Kid said can I get some food. I normally don't give anyone anything but that appealed to me and i let him order whatever he wanted and busted out a credit card. He ordered like 5 double cheeseburgers and some cookies. Im happy to give food or water but I never give cash. I feel blessed that I don't have to beg people for food.

180

u/sourgrrrrl Aug 13 '22

Damn it sounds like a strategy to feed family. Sounds like you could have been the right person at the right time.

Last I gave a gift card to fast food the guy was pretty happy. Gives them a way to get food and be entitled to a spot out of the elements for a while/maybe a bathroom. I feel blessed for the same reason and also because I can stop at McDonald's to pee without buying anything and no one cares.

32

u/Mobile-Control Aug 13 '22

I did this for two homeless people standing outside a Dollarama. Went in, bought each of them gift cards, and they were both appreciative, because it let's them choose what they're going to get. Maybe they need that "Emergency Blanket" on the shelf. Or maybe they want food. Or batteries. I dunno what they got with them, but they were glad to have 'em.

I did nearly the same thing last year and I'll be hard-pressed to help anyone again.

I was at a BP and there were two individuals and a dog sitting up against the curb with all of their stuff in suitcases. It was H O T as hell outside, and the dog was panting it's face off.

I went inside, and got two Coke Zeros, two apple pies, and a jug of water for their dog, along with a big cup so they could pour the water into it if needed. I went back outside to give it to them. This lady starts talking about how she can't take any of that because of her diabetes. I explain that I got Coke Zero, with no sugar. The guy starts ragging on me for Coke Zero instead of Real Coke. Oh, and the dog? The dog only drinks Smart Water. No shit.

Same thing happened to me, stopped by a 7-11 on the way home for a slurpee, bottled water and a few snacks. A homeless lady outside asked me for a few bucks because she was sooooo hungry. I offered her my snacks and water, but she turned up her nose and angrily demanded I hand over my slurpee. She said “you can’t mix vodka with water”. I told her to shove off and I ran to my car.

One of my first jobs was working at Petco Park for the Padres home games. I remember one day I went out to lunch to the nearest 711, grabbed myself some taquitos and a drink. I was sitting outside the stadium when this big homeless lady walks up to me, she asked for some money. I was feeling nice so I wanted to give her the change that was in my wallet (I don’t like carrying lose coins). So I took out my wallet, she sees the bills that are in there and says “let me get a 20”, in my head I’m like “😂” so I find the lose coins and it was 2 dimes. I grabbed them and put them on her hand and said “here you go, 20”.. she looked down at her hand, then at me, she was in disbelief. I walked away while she was still standing there looking at her hand.

I used to work at a restaurant, and a few homeless people would hang out near our back door/dumpster area. They’d always ask for money, food, etc. Usually they’d say that they’re hungry, their families are hungry, they reallllyyyy need money for food, and so on. So instead of money, I’d offer them food. Really good food mind you, I’d offer to make them a whole fresh cooked meal, with protein (salmon, chicken, beef, etc), rice, veggies, etc. 9 times out of 10 they’d come up with a reason why they only need cash to buy food, why a fresh meal wasn’t good enough, thinking that if I was being generous like that they could easily get cash instead. I’d even offer to take them to the grocery store, and they’d still decline and get angry when I said no cash.

For the 1/10 that was actually just hungry they were very appreciative, but all the rest would get really angry when they thought that they found a rube, and then they got nothing because they were being greedy. Just aggravated me honestly. Here I am trying to offer a 20+ dollar fresh meal for free, and they’re still calling me names because I won’t give them cash. I feel bad for the homeless, I know that even the ones asking for cash didn’t want to end up that way, but it’s very annoying to get hate and anger when you’re trying to give someone exactly what they’re asking for.

One time this woman walked up to me crying, telling me about how she has two kids and she can’t afford to feed them or buy them diapers. I gave her $20 dollars. She immediately stopped crying and said “can’t you give me any more”. I said “no, that’s all I had in my wallet” and she said “man you cheap ass motherfucker fuck you”.

That was the day I stopped trying to help people.

This is the cool part about living in my little island (S.Miguel), we actually know most of the homeless people, the ones that are cunts (Usually drug addicts that hate everyone else and believe everyone's rich and stingy) have to go near ports & plazas and only ask money from tourists, they got pretty good at discerning who is a tourist and who isn't too. And those fucks make more money than a minimum wage worker. I've seen the biggest cunt of them all walking away with over 70€ in his hand just from bullshitting tourists for a few hours.

Then there's the good guys, who we know aren't drug addicts, and are quite the opposite of entitled, and have created positive relationships with many people. You may find this odd or untrue but: they're happy and positive af, they make jokes, they help people with their shopping and what not (without expecting to get paid for it), and they're the ones we help. They're part of our community, and we create a sort of indirect support group for them. On these days at these hours this lady usually comes and buys him some food or gives him some change, etc. Basically a handfull of people who already decided to help that man routinely

That's pretty much what you should try to do if you want to help some people, KNOW THEM FIRST, and once you truly know that person deserves the help, then that's the person you're going to help.

I remember seeing a video of a self defense class where this guy was demonstrating why your only real course of action is to run away from a a knife attacker. Anything less means you're getting stabbed and fighting for your life. Knife fights look brutal man. Movies make it look like something where some carefully coordinated martial arts training will allow you to push your opponent away or redirect their arm or whatever. Naw man. You can't stop a bullrush like that. It's fast. There's nothing graceful or coordinated about it. They just need to get close for a fraction of a second and plunge the fucker 5-10 times into any part of you in an uncoordinated flurry of attacks. And then any time I've seen videos of actual stabbings, there's always much blood, so fast. It looks awful.

Edit: found the video thanks to /u/j_talbain-WSAhttps://youtu.be/E61jnJe_1SI

471

u/lunchboxdeluxe Aug 13 '22

Yeah, if you get into a knife fight, you're almost certainly getting cut. I mean, I guess it's technically possible to wrestle a knife away from somebody but the vast vast majority of the time you're just gonna get perforated instead.

575

u/TheMadFlyentist Aug 13 '22

The best chance you have of repelling a knife attacker without a weapon yourself is removing something like your shirt and trying to trap the blade. But you're still probably better off trying to get away. No good odds there in either case.

10

u/CherryHaterade Aug 13 '22

I have watched enough Hollywood movies to know that you instantly undo your belt, parry the lunge, wrap the arm, pivot, and hip check. Bonus points if you break the arm or dislocate the shoulder after they go over top and are back on the ground. You do this last part while you're looking at their people and never break eye contact with the next biggest one. Then you walk away quietly, don't make a big fuss or a big speech, the rest of the would be assailant posse consider you more of a badass if you don't disrespect them all.

Yes, my uncoordinated ass is about to get OJ Simpsoned.

u/pm-me-your-pants Aug 13 '22 edited Aug 13 '22

It reminded me of the one of the hockey player getting his jugular sliced by another player's skate during a game

He survived, but only because his coach used his fingers and later whole body to keep his artery clamped shut. Same type of blood loss as the stabbing vid, only difference is someone with intense first aid knowledge tended to the victim within seconds.

I've done a decent amount of knife training, and my number one take away has always been: knife fighting is the biggest and most dangerous myth movie fights perpetuate. It's a fucking nightmare, and unless you are literally Jason Bourne, not only are you not going to walk away without a scratch, you should consider yourself lucky if you walk away AT ALL.

The joke they always made about knife fighting: the winner of the fight is the one in the hospital not the morgue.

9

u/newusername4oldfart Aug 13 '22

The loser of a knife fight dies in the street. The winner of a knife fight dies in the ambulance.

That’s what I was taught. The solution to a knife fight is distance. If the knife is within twenty five feet of you, run. If he’s walking down the street with it, step away from the table and move into the building.

Weapons work as a last resort, but should be fully utilized to disable the threat. Pepper spray ain’t doing shit here if she ain’t running. Tasers are more effective but should still be combined with getting inside and locking the door. Guns should be fired until the threat stops moving or flees.

The man started losing lots of blood and just a few seconds later he dropped dead on the ground. It's scary to think how fast shit can go completely wrong when there's a knife involved.

Yup, there was a video on reddit a couple weeks back where two groups of people were squaring up to fight in a mall after it was closed. (Possibly in Australia?) There was shouting back and forth and a bit of shoving. A guy from behind group A suddenly moves towards a guy in group B. The Group B guy had a knife, and one quick jab to his neck was all it took. The guy puts his hand to his neck in a sort of "owie" look, and then stands for a moment as blood comes out, he stumbles a bit, and just goes down. Truly horrifying, and it was so fucking quick. As fast as you could bitch slap someone. One quick slash, and it could have been over for her.

I’ve been in a freaky situation like that and froze completely. Zero flight or fight. Other people act casual even though internally they’re panicking. You never really know how you’ll react til you’re in the situation and there’s a whole range of reactions you might have.

103

u/blindreefer Aug 13 '22

It’s pretty common for people to seem very calm in terrifying situations. A lot of times you don’t realize the kind of danger you’re in until later.

31

Also, some worry that showing fear will only embolden the assailant.

And others are worried about being humiliated &/or being embarrassed which overrides their fight or flight response in the moment.

People don’t realize some people are relatively unfazed by pepper spray and the true pain of being sprayed does not really start until after a few minutes when your skin feels like it’s got the worst sun burn ever. Ladies don’t think for one second pepper spray will stop a determined attacker. Spray and use that spit second he’s stunned to run the fuck away as fast as possible. That man clearly could have stabbed her after being sprayed. THINK about that.

66

u/CrumbsAndCarrots Aug 13 '22

I have a riot control canister. I figure if I use it, I’m gonna make it count. Has 1 minute of solid stream.

I once got beat up (unprovoked by some cholos when I was a teen). They then went after my buddy who had pepper spray, and happy to say both dudes immediately ended up in the fetal position and being dragged away by their gfs. My buddy unloaded and got them directly in the eyes.

Cayenne? Fuck that, put some straight capsicum and alcohol in there, no one is messing with you after getting sprayed with that. Probably super illegal, but so is stabbing someone. I'd much rather get arrested for having a weapon than get stabbed.

A lot of people do not realize pepper spray has a shelf life of roughly 3-4 years before it starts to lose potency. If you buy a cheap, Amazon brand pepper spray it probably loses its kick after only a couple years.

112

u/Oddblivious Aug 13 '22

What's a cheap Amazon brand?

The first like 10 results are all the same sabre red in various different dispensers. It's the most common spray kind and generally considered pretty effective.

I was sprayed while serving in the navy there were 2 sailors both women ( no idea if that matters) that the spray had no effect on. On the other side I was immensely affected and I won the biggest pansy award :/

Edit: I'd like to point out I was being sprayed in a training exercise

27

u/homejam Aug 13 '22

I had a similar experience working at adult probation many many years ago... pepper spray was our provided defense weapon. we went to the state police academy for training and for the pepper spray part, we all lined up, about 20 or so of us, and the trainer started from about 30 yards away spraying the stuff in the air -- i think it was called Cap-Stun? -- and many of us could feel the burning right away. we could bow out of line as the effects built. but this one guy was totally unfazed. eventually the training officer was literally spraying it right in his face and the guy was just licking the pepper off his beard and mustache laughing and said "tastes pretty good". we were advised that it just doesn't work on some people.

You can’t rely on pepper spray to completely stop an assailant. In most cases it just buys time. Spray and run. This woman is lucky it didn’t enrage this man enough for him to use the knife on her.

562

u/PurifiedFlubber Aug 13 '22 Wholesome

Also after you pepper spray someone in the eyes you're supposed to aim for the mouth for a second so they can't breathe, disabling them long enough to get away.

93

u/Thefunkbox Aug 13 '22

Is there a better alternative? I’d love to make sure my niece is well prepared and my daughter when she gets older.

119

u/Vysoky Aug 13 '22

So for what its worth, there was an interview with Jonny Knoxville a while back and he said in his opinion pepper spray was the best non-lethal self defense. Stun gun, they can pull the prong out if both don't stick. Taser you have to be REALLY close. But with pepper spray, it's on you and it gets everywhere.

54

u/Omni33 Aug 13 '22

Also, according to him he felt "like my eyes have gonorrhoea"

Yeah never stay near an attacker after pepper spraying. Police PSA’s literally say to get away after using it and call cops because the attacker is blinded. It doesn’t make them unable to punch you.

222

u/ragingbologna Aug 13 '22

And you always call the cops because if the assailant calls then later, they can claim you sprayed them unprovoked and press charges.

107

u/s1thl0rd Aug 13 '22

Yep. It's a race to the courthouse. Always call in self-defense encounters.

Tv shows and movies usually make it look like the pain is so unbearable that they like drop to the ground screaming and covering/wiping their eyes.

19

u/ZoddImmortal Aug 13 '22 edited Aug 13 '22

This lady used pepper spray instead of pepper stream, which is much more effective. She basically misted the air between them, where stream will splatter his face.

It also could of been expired, as all pepper defense products expire after 2 years. The capsaicin degrades.

Edit: For anyone looking for a recommendation, POM is the smallest stream I have been able to find, and it's only $13.

I also think she used cheap gas station keychain pepper spray. They're usually not very potent and don't have longer than a half a second of spray in them. Fox Labs pepper spray has 5.3 million Scoville heat units. I doubt he would have been able to ride the bicycle very well after using something like that. But you're right she shouldn't have just sprayed him and sat there expecting him to writhe in agony on the ground or something. Dude definitely could have hurt her after she did that.

Pepper spray is notoriously inconsistent depending on the person. I've seen people curled up in the fetal position screaming and I've seen people respond like this. You also absolutely HAVE to have the element of surprise... Too many people pull it out and threaten to use it. It's very easy to block /cover your face once you know it's coming..

21

u/fabezz Aug 13 '22

Someone else mentioned that the spray can go bad. I also imagine certain cheap brands skimp on the ingredients. They don't expect customers to be testing the stuff out on themselves before they need it, after all.

10

u/Conscious_Camel4830 Aug 13 '22

Right.. and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure what they sell to the public is different than what they issue police and military

The situational awareness here makes me cringe. A man is threatening this woman with a knife, within arms length. And she continues to sit there and even turns away from him. Glad this didn’t end worse.

119

u/ThoughtCondom Aug 13 '22

I get the feeling that she's kind of become numb to the crazy people in that neighborhood and she thinks that if she ignores him that he will go away.
