Regarding Rule 4

Dearest users,

Many of the videos that are posted to our subreddit depicting people losing their cool or having a meltdown are shared across the internet. Sometimes what you see here may be upsetting, but it is important to follow subreddit and sitewide rules when commenting.

Reminder: Rule 4; No racism, sexism, transphobia, or bigotry. - Racist people freaking out in videos are allowed, but being a racist in the comment section will get you banned. We have, can, and do issue permanent bans to folks who violate this rule.

We truly do want to keep this subreddit operating for people to share good, original content.

It is imperative that you all follow this rule and report any violations of this rule. We get around 13k comments on average per day and that’s a lot of comments to manually sift through. We do our best in removing rule violating comments manually in the comment section, but we cannot catch them all. As most large subreddits do, we rely largely on the community to report rule violations.

Please remember that users cannot see what actions have been taken in the subreddit. For every comment which violates Rule 4 that is reported and actioned, there are 100 more that are never reported. It takes time to go through every posts comment section to read every single comment to find the unreported comments which violate both subreddit and sitewide rules.

13k comments every single day is a novels worth of text and as hard as our team tries we just cannot catch all rule violating comments due to the sheer volume of comments. It takes me personally a few hours to go through a thread that has 2k+ comments and the time spent moderating threads does not simply involve reading. Every mod action takes time, and our team members also are bound to report egregious TOS violations to admin for further review. These are not instant actions that a single mouse click is sufficient for.

Our team has seen your complaints about the volume of rule 4 violating comments, and we are working hard to rectify it. Unfortunately this is not something we can get under serious control without communities help, due to aforementioned reasons.

Our team consists of people of all walks of life, male, female, trans, black, white, etc. No one on our team wants this to be a notoriously bigoted subreddit, yet it is.

We apologize for anything you have seen here that you could have lived a happy life without seeing. We are trying.

Please note that any and all flairs that the mods of this subreddit tag a post with (such as NSFL) will only show up when viewing content directly from this subreddit. If you see a post from the front page and it is not appropriately tagged, it is because Reddit does not show these flairs on the front page. A recent post which comes to mind is the man running over his girlfriend. That post was tagged NSFL within an hour of it being posted, but many users made comments upset that it was not tagged nsfl. It was, but not if you were coming from the front page etc.

Please report any rule or tos infractions ASAP when you see them, as it will absolutely make the community a better place.

Thanks so much- Publicfreakout Mod Team.

Could you please ban users and remove posts from people that constantly upload over-edited videos with emojis popping up all over the screen and loud strange noises? It feels like a good number of shitposts here are by the same repeat offenders.

74

u/CanITellUSmThin Aug 06 '22

Those videos are the absolute worst.

34

u/Individual-Ad7074 Aug 06 '22

The wooooorst!

43

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

They rly are. I’m personally stuck in comment sections most of the day and don’t really see many incoming posts, but when I come across them I am highly annoyed as well.

23

u/Individual-Ad7074 Aug 06 '22

Lol. I can only imagine the crap you have to watch and deal with. Godspeed to you.

32

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Doing this I have seen so many things that I never wanted to see but I think the worst I remember is users posting videos of actual shit coming out of their actual greasy buttholes. 🤮

24

u/Muffin_Appropriate Aug 06 '22

I mod a former default subreddit on another account. I spent a lot of time in new or rising to purge posts before they’d get out of hand. Once came across one of a guy cutting off kittens heads uploaded to streamable when it was free to upload fairy large videos.

People don’t really appreciate some of the stuff moderators have to see

27

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

I work for other sites too doing actual paid professional moderation and the amount of shit I see regularly which requires FBI reports is absolutely insane. Thanks for understanding. No I don’t want to see any of this but I also feel like other people shouldn’t, so I still do it, and will other people take the time out of their day to flag these folks to the govt? Doubt it. So I will remain.

I will try to personally more closely monitor new submissions. I appreciate your input and will speak to my fellow mods about this issue. Thank you.

u/jkbpttrsn Aug 06 '22

Thank you! It sucks to see great public freakout videos that originally are 5-10 minutes cut into crappy Facebook videos with dramatic music and texts/emojis all over. Even sadder when many get upvoted to the top by the community.

Redditors hate this one simple trick

20

u/Vic_from_fallout_2 Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 06 '22

Also might be good for them to look into users who only ever post videos of black people and have very strange, often racey, comments to make about them. Comments like, "people who behave like this belong in a zoo" or "I have a gun so I wish they'd try to rob me" and such.

They are all genuine freakouts and public chaos, but the context behind posting only those and making those remarks is really teetering on blatant racism. Very few good comments come from those posts too, and the mods even lock them before I arrive half the time.

edit: just remembered, /r/cringe had this exact same problem with people constantly posting content depicting kids. They ended up just banning anything with kids in it.

We can't just blanket-ban anything with black people though. Maybe just continue locking the threads, I guess.

7

u/Ordinary-Equipment19 Aug 07 '22

I've said this multiple times here and it always feel like it falls on deaf ears :^

Like legit racism out in the open and the pattern of only posting black people being violent for some reason. The pattern is very obvious after you look a bit

I have done so a few times, please continue to report and I or another mod will take care of this

10

Your own mod coffetablesex laughs at reports of racism and then antagonizes those who report it.

I don't think you or this mod team give any shits since he's clearly one of the ones in charge.

2

u/shehoodthoneyo Aug 16 '22

Yeah, I’m getting threatened to be banned for “no reason” by your mod coffetablesex.

Guess power tripping isn’t covered, huh?

That's good news. I remember getting downvoted to hell for pointing out how racist the sub had gotten.

6

u/mephilis6264 Aug 13 '22

yea same, too bad they have one racist mod right here though, lol

12

u/MostlySpeechless Aug 07 '22

What's about Rule 8? I know there was A LOT of complains about that video with the guy running over his girlfriend and also another one I can't remember right now, but they are excused due to it being news worthy but it still rubbed many the wrong way.

11

u/bigmac22077 Aug 09 '22

This sub is slowly becoming the new watch people die sub and it’s awful. I would really prefer it if that kind of stuff got taken off. I keep thinking about that poor kid getting stabbed 7 times and saying “I’m dead”, with everyone just laughing in the comments.. and that poor Muslim tailor. These things aren’t “news worthy”, they are random killings/murders. It’s not like they’re showing us the war crimes Russia is committing.

7

u/MostlySpeechless Aug 09 '22

Yeah, honestly I find the change quite shocking. I remember times were you needed to go to specific websites to see shit like that, now it's just open for everyone on fucking reddit. It's crazy how used everyone seem to have gotten to seeing things like that

5

u/BigSockForSweatyCock Aug 09 '22

That "poor kid" was a masked intruder robbing the place. You can argue that he didn't deserve to get stabbed like that, but that situation was ENTIRELY 100% of his own doing.

8

u/bigmac22077 Aug 09 '22

Thanks for your contribution, I have nothing to add as I do not care to talk about this subject. I hope you have a great day.

Happy to see this message from mods.

16

u/dexmonic Aug 07 '22

Same. Not much I can do to stop a person from being racist but hopefully we can keep it off this sub as much as possible.

3

u/LaughingCryingEmoje Aug 08 '22

the most one can do is report them, and from my experience reporting works for the most part

8

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '22

Too bad it means nothing, this subs reputation is justified and won't change unless the mods crack down HARD.

8

u/BagelsAndLoxx Aug 12 '22

The mods are some of the biggest issues with the sub. The racist mod is not going to start cracking down on racism.

10

u/VerucaBlind Aug 09 '22

Shame not much will change, especially when some of the mods (CTS) are bigots themselves and see nothing wrong, thus, they do nothing.

5

u/katikaboom Aug 09 '22

Agreed, I'm still seeing blatant racism and reporting does fuck all.

120

u/FrankPoole3001 Aug 06 '22

We also need to start punishing the use of dog whistles.

65

u/Bladewing10 Aug 06 '22

100%. The people who are chronic violators of rule 4 think they're clever by using the most minimal of innuendos but it's obvious what their point is. I hope the mods take that into account and aren't just looking for the most blatant of bigoted language and posts.

59

u/Shitty---Photoshop Aug 06 '22

Or, using a derogatory word followed by"culture" as a code word for a non-white negative racist placeholder.

Or, saying " i didn't have to guess the race after reading this title"

Or, "religion of peace /s"

Or, "why is it always these people doing this"

3

u/Needsmorsleep Aug 07 '22

Just so you know a religion is not a race. Though maybe rule 4 should be updated to ban hate against all religions. However since religion is an ideology, bad ideas should to be able to be challenged. So it's basically someone would need to toe the line between academic criticism and hate.

11

u/churnedGoldman Aug 08 '22

Bruh, bigotry. It's about more than race alone.

23

u/Shitty---Photoshop Aug 07 '22

Fair take, but i see "religion of peace" used as anti Muslim rhetoric directed at a whole people and religion.

15

u/mursilissilisrum Aug 07 '22

Just so you know a religion is not a race.

There are definitely ethnoreligions though. And it's kind of a trifling hair to split unless you're trying to feel better about saying bigoted shit about Muslims and Jews.

3

u/thisiskitta Aug 10 '22

K. Maybe check up on the word B I G O T R Y. Rule 4 already covers this.

6

u/barrinmw Aug 09 '22

The fact that the people who hate Muslims seem to also lump Sikhs in with them make me think it is less a religion thing and more a racist thing.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

That's the exact kind of shit that earns this sub it's reputation as mentioned in the OP. We all know you don't care if a middle Eastern person is Muslim, Christian, or Zoroastrian. You just assume that all middle easterners are Muslim.

39

u/FrankPoole3001 Aug 06 '22

One of the biggest and most obvious ones is when someone posts "N" under a video of a freakout involving black people.

When I first started reporting those comments I would get the standard "Did not violate reddit policy blah blah blah", but over time they started removing them, so there's hope.

23

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

I remove every N comment I come across. If it has been several hours and a comment like that has not been removed, do not hesitate to personally mention me in a child comment under said comments. I can only remove what I see and I am not active 24 hrs a day so if the report function hasn’t done anything I will personally see to every user mention under a violating comment, as it is the easiest way to notify me, personally.

16

u/Kinaestheticsz Aug 07 '22

Do you guys not have an Automoderator rule such as this?

type: comment
body_shorter_than: 2
action: remove
action_reason: "short submission"

12

u/abevigodasmells Aug 06 '22

"Animals" is one such word, so for awhile I used it liberally for the race that our bigots seem to belong to. Just trying to get the point across that a person's disgraceful conduct has nothing to do with their race.

It’s so fucked up and just getting worse lately. Mind you, it was already really bad obviously but yeesh.

43

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Agreed. We do whenever we come across them and users who are using dogwhistles notoriously gaslight us in mod mail. example from last night

60

u/Relative-Low-940 Aug 06 '22

One of the most popular ones is calling black people "animals".

Hoping someone dies, gets killed or gets hurt is against the rules, right?

Because I literally see calls for people to get run over whenever there is a video of people protesting in the road.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

Oh my God I am so sick of seeing the same (usually highly-upvoted) comments along the lines of "They should protest more politely, because you'll never get people to join the cause if you make them late for work"

44

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 06 '22

I ban literally every user I see calling black people animals and have historically stickied comments saying not to do that in which the community attacked me for.. I still get rape threats to this day for telling members of this community not to do that. Recently (in the past week) we have added all monkey and gorilla emojis to the automod as well.

Yes all violent comments violate TOS but rarely are they reported. Some are, don’t get me wrong, but the vast majority are not. And I miss a lot in the mod queue just bc I’m in comment sections manually removing TOS violations. We have new mods tho and in the past 48 hrs the mod queue has been empty due to mods taking action, hopefully this issue will resolve. Say hi to our new mod and one our top contributors, u/Romano16 who has been doing an excellent job with the mod queue.

Thanks u/Romano16 for accepting such a role in the community despite knowing the difficulties.

11

u/ColonelWilly Aug 07 '22 edited Aug 07 '22

This is your choice? Go to their submitted posts. 99% of what they post is white people being 'Karens' and/or racist. They're as bad as the brigaders that do nothing but post rioters/looters during protests or "migrant freak out" spammers. Appalling both ways.

3

u/blackestrabbit Aug 08 '22

Those are their qualifications to mod this sub wdym?

11

u/Relative-Low-940 Aug 06 '22

Thanks for your response. I can understand the brigading makes your jobs more difficult and appreciate the effort you are taking.

Edit: welcome u/Romano16 !

6

u/el-em-en-o Aug 06 '22

So, you set up filters that look for specific words? If they’re found, a mod manually goes through them? Or do the auto filters delete some comments/posts immediately? Or both? (This is really interesting.)

6

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Yes there are bots which auto remove certain words and phrases. We still have to manually ban the users whose comments trigger these bots, however.

5

u/KissMyAsthma-99 Aug 07 '22

I ban literally every user I see calling black people animals

I'm black and regularly call both white and black people who do crazy criminal shit animals. I think it applies. I'm assuming that, according to this update, BOTH of those would be considered racist comments? Or can I continue calling white people animals all I want?

4

u/ohhyouknow Aug 07 '22

Use discretion when commenting on videos bc this is not BPT we do not require folks to prove their race before commenting.

3

u/KissMyAsthma-99 Aug 07 '22

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Could you just clarify that it's always against the rules to call people animals or it's only against the rules if they are black?

14

u/ohhyouknow Aug 07 '22

Just don’t call anyone an animal yikes

5

u/KissMyAsthma-99 Aug 07 '22

So all references to someone being an animal will be treated equally, then. 10-4.

9

u/ohhyouknow Aug 07 '22

That ain’t what I said. I said use discretion, you know, think about what you are saying when you say something here and how it may be taken, and don’t call anyone animals if you are worried about a ban. Not every comment is caught so you will find comments like that that mods have missed regarding all races. Doesn’t mean it’s fair game to say. You may or may not be banned for saying it about anyone based on context and mod availability.

I always see people comment on videos of black kids being shitty call them thugs or statistics.

Meanwhile white kids in videos being shitty are just called softer things that have no weight or double meaning like trashy, or people cope by saying “wow drugs/alcohol/mental illness is no joke, hope they can turn their life around and get the help they need”

7

u/abevigodasmells Aug 07 '22

Yes, black kids have no fathers, have horrible parenting, parents are on crack, etc. They act like we assume these things because it's true for POC. But white kids are bad apples. I don't generally report these, because I figure it's hard to prove it's racism. But, it is.

u/FrankPoole3001 Aug 07 '22

I don't think this is true at all. I see both races get called everything.

5

u/cruthkaye Aug 06 '22

what exactly are dog whistles (in this context)?

8

u/FrankPoole3001 Aug 06 '22

From Wikipedia:

In politics, a dog whistle is the use of coded or suggestive language in political messaging to garner support from a particular group without provoking opposition. The concept is named for ultrasonic dog whistles, which are audible to dogs but not humans. Dog whistles use language that appears normal to the majority but communicates specific things to intended audiences. They are generally used to convey messages on issues likely to provoke controversy without attracting negative attention.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_whistle_(politics)

For example, someone will post a video posted involving black people in some sort of way. Someone in the comments will post a simple "N", usually hoping for someone to reply with an "I" and so on.

-3

u/Duckman420666 Aug 07 '22

I’ve been monitoring the mod queue since that was posted and have removed several rule violating comments from that thread as well as banned the users who posted them. I have been busy for approximately three or four hours now but am about to get in the queue again so if you can so kindly report the comments you are speaking of that would be nice.

5

u/ohhyouknow Aug 10 '22 edited Aug 10 '22

I’m not sure why anyone thinks that I can make CTS do anything. They are their own person and holds the second highest mod position on this subreddit while I hold the second lowest. There are several reasons why I have not addressed their comment yet in this thread.

I will start with real life. I have a life. I have a farm. I have a child. My child starts school in two days. For the past few days I have been running around looking for and buying school uniforms, classroom supplies, going back and forth picking up, filing out paperwork, going to orientation. That’s on top of working, running a farm, you know, feeding animals, shoveling poop, waking up at the break of dawn to let them out, giving medical treatments, cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Doing dishes, doing laundry, general house upkeep.

On the 11th my kid will be back in school and I’ll have a lot more free time. Pretty much this weekend through today has just been very busy for me. Pretty much most of what I’ve done on Reddit these past few days is try my best to take care of the mod queue, the thing I promised to monitor more closely. I’ve made a few random comments but I haven’t just been sitting on Reddit all day enjoying my time here. So I appreciate your patience in waiting for my response. I’m a real person with a real life.

As for CTS comment. CTS saw me spend hours in that EXACT thread removing comments and banning folks before that report was ever left. The report was left in the middle of the night while pretty much all the active mods including myself were sleeping. Yes we have some gaps in time on our sub that have no one monitoring it but we do every morning collectively take hours out of our day to clear the backlog.

I don’t think they were mocking that person as much as they were pissed being accused of just being okay with bigotry bc users cannot see the absolute immense amount of time and effort we put into this subreddit to remove the exact thing that user was upset about.

The report:

“1: How do you guys let the comments stay so racist. When a white person does something bad all the comments will say oh she’s mentally ill or something. As soon as it’s a black persoon everyone say oh she’s racist, all blacks are bad. And you guys let the comment do so. Imagine we said that about white people. We would be banned permanently.”

For one, this report is an abuse of the report button. The post broke no rules and even though the user did have a point, the proper avenue to discuss something like that with the mod team is mod mail. We can’t personally even respond to reports or see who reported so that report was useless.

Two: for every rule 4 violating comment that gets reported and goes to our mod queue, 20 more go unreported. Again, as stated in this post this subreddit gets thirteen THOUSAND comments on average a day. If only a small fraction of rule 4 violations are actually reported, that means that our team which is a lot smaller than it appears (bc of alts and bots on the mod team) has to manually sift through 13k comments a day. I can pm you with the number of active comment mods but it’s not something I can disclose publicly and you will be shocked.

I’m not personally blaming the community for just letting all these violations go unreported but the lack of action by the community makes this SO MUCH HARDER than it needs to be for mods. And I can’t say anything to CTS bc they are in a significant position of power over me in this subreddit. CTS was rightfully annoyed by that report, perhaps they shouldn’t have stickied that but it is THEIR prerogative, and cts pretty much answers to nobody.

Id like to again address the report left by that user. They literally said “imagine we said that about white people, we’d be permanently banned.”

That is LEGITIMATELY not true. I have stickied posts saying those exact things about white ppl just to see how the community would react, bc I had to know (curiosity) and the community absolutely blew the fuck up on me. Seriously, go a month or two back in my comment history. Yes annoying users think they know it all but we have legit experimented with this idea. Your account is old enough. You didn’t see that? Or are you willing to admit that you don’t see everything that happens on this sub and behind the scenes?

Because coffeetablesex saw and sees it all, and has a right to defend theirself and our team against allegations made through an avenue which the only way we could respond is doing exactly what they did, pasting the report in and then saying how they felt about it.

To you it was mocking, to us the report was a slap to the face. Not everything is as simple as it appears. Also y’all all misgender CTS and myself and that is problematic in itsself. Just wait til you find out that one of the users defending us in this thread is an ex mod transwoman who fucking quit bc of the hate brigade against her this subreddit brought. Yea she’s in here defending us bc she knows how it is, love that bitch and the community fucked with her so bad.

There are literal transpeople who still mod this sub, but they are accused daily of being transphobic. I am a woman and I am accused daily of being sexist against women. There are black people and they are accused daily of being racist against black people. Not very cool of the community but the community can’t see all that we do here. It’s not our fault that pf is a target for brigading from 4chan and other subs but we do more and put up with more abuse than the average person could handle. Do you take the time out of your day to fill out paperwork for the fbi when you see unhinged comments? Doubt it but I do it all the time bc I care.

Also I do not respond to anyone unless I have the time to think what I’m saying through and it would not have been appropriate for me to respond to you sooner bc I literally didn’t have the time to give you the response you deserved, something that I thought in depth about. Please do not tag me anywhere else in any other thread about this again. I do what I can when I can and it’s not fair to me to have 50 inappropriate messages all expecting sincere responses in my personal dms. I don’t have time for that, again I’m a real person who lives a real life, I’m a mother, a wife, a sister, an aunt, a daughter, a working woman, and a farmer.

If people think this is notoriously bigoted imagine how they’d react to r/actualpublicfreakouts

125

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 09 '22

That subreddit was created by bigots who were banned from this subreddit for being bigoted.

22

u/NightimeNinja Aug 06 '22

Interesting. I've heard this about most the subreddits with actual in front of their name. Definitely seen evidence of it on that one.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '22

It's a general rule of thumb that any sub created with the exact same premise as another popular sub is usually because either a) the original sub has gone so far off the rails that it is no longer relevant, or b) the new sub is primarily made of people who are no longer able to use the first sub, and almost inevitably those people are no longer able to use that sub because they're hateful idiots.

Take a look at the original sub's content, if it's still generally relevant, it usually means the "actual/real/etc." sub is the latter.

The only exception to this rule I know is /r/actuallesbians, because the "lesbians" sub is a porn sub.

11

u/PoignantOpinionsOnly Aug 07 '22

I remember "UncensoredNews."

The creators and mods of the sub openly admitted to being neo nazis. They used Nazi symbols as part of the sub design.

The exact opposite of subtle.

4

u/NightimeNinja Aug 07 '22

There's been entire campaigns of far right infiltration in certain subs. They get people into mod positions who will overlook their bigotry and then a sub slowly rots from the inside out. Before you know it you can't visit without hearing a far right angle on anything that goes unchallenged.

The sub was created because the moderators here don't always seem to have a handle on what is a public freakout. There are too many public non-freakouts, non-public freakouts, and non-public non-freakouts on this sub.

It's definitely better than it was a couple of years ago, but some days it's submission after submission of just "Here's political news from CNN." This sub used to be my favorite across reddit when I first discovered it in 2015 or so.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

3

u/lumaga Aug 08 '22

Yeah. What do any of those say? Would you like to address anything specific, or are you letting a tool and others' old opinions decide yours?

The_Donald is old news, man.

Neatly dodging the core issue of political non-freakouts spamming this sub all the time.

3

u/lumaga Aug 09 '22

They don't care.

2

u/lumaga Aug 08 '22

I'm just here to see people lose their shit. Between the two subreddits, that desire gets filled.

A lot of the videos here get reposted on https://boards.4chan.org/pol/ and then they come here and start with the racial bigotry and upvote/downvote spam

Just so everyone is aware

12

u/SwitchHitter17 Aug 08 '22

That makes a lot of sense. It seems like many of those video comments are heavily brigaded and I see outright racist or racist dogwhistle posts highly upvoted (I'm guessing by the brigade). It's so transparent. Hoping the mods crack down on this.

Yes we do.

That would be a great first step I'd imagine, it sounds like you're spread really thin. Best of luck to you!

It's a shame people have to keep being reminded to not be a racist, homophobic & shit person....is it that hard to be a decent human being?

7

u/bhsvhssfgjc Aug 07 '22

A lot of it is coordinated misinfo/trolling/bots/brigading from the racist subs IMO. A lot of the “cringe” subs seem to be suffering heavily from this shit.

10

u/abevigodasmells Aug 06 '22

I commend the mods A LOT for the increase of locking comments on clear race-baiting posts. This has helped tremendously. I 100% support any time you feel there's too many people lacking the maturity to comment respectfully.

15

u/Closeted_Axolotl Aug 06 '22

I got downvoted like crazy for calling people out on being racist. Nice to see mods pointing it out

2

u/Hereistothehometeam Aug 09 '22

We should also buckle down on the 1/4 of posts a day that don’t pertain to this sub in the slightest

2

u/angstyart Aug 14 '22

Thank you for this statement. I have seen some truly horrifying and disgusting things said on here. Y’all have always been responsive when I reported the worst of it. Hopefully this dissuades the people who want to tap dance by insinuating animalistic behavior comes from people of color, or that any woman is a “fucking whale”. It is fun to watch fights. It is deeply disturbing to watch people glorify or denigrate violence because of how someone looks or identifies.

6

u/confusedm1nd Aug 08 '22

How about banning people who use the word 'goon' and 'thug' as a description of people in the videos just to purely be a dog whistle

6

u/AxtonH Aug 07 '22

I've made several reports on racist and transphobic comments here that were not sustained after review. It seems that whoever reviews these reports needs to understand how racism and transphobia works when people are not trying to be extremely overt about it. Dogwhistling at racism is still racism and it hasn't been treated that way in the past on this sub.

13

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

Is there any official rule yet prohibiting videos that have optics which are critical of Israel?

I've noticed (and I'm sure everyone else has) that when such a video reaches Hot, it gets removed.

But other geopolitical-related videos are allowed to remain up.

12

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

We have discussed this internally and myself and other mods have checked the mod logs, there is no mod actively removing Israel/Palestine posts. We believe that automod is removing them after a certain number of reports but bc it is automated we do not receive any significant notification of these automated actions. In the future if any post is removed that you do not agree with do not hesitate to contact modmail or tag me personally.

2

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

Thank you for the response, I appreciate it greatly.

There have been several videos posted due to the recent events in Gaza, which were recently removed.

This one made it to the top of Hot, but got auto-modded I assume:

https://old.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/wh2khq/5_year_old_palestinian_child_killed_in_the_latest/

9

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

I believe that particular post was removed by our head mod for being a repost. There is another post with that exact video up right now which has a NSFL tag on it.

7

u/LosAngelesLosers Aug 06 '22

Like 90% of this sub is reposts tho why would that particular one be removed but not others?

8

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Simply bc there was a mod who saw the first post and subsequent repost. Unfortunately due to life obligations none of us are on daily and there are absolutely posts that are reposted that we never see the original post from, so we simply do not have in our brains that what we are seeing is in fact a repost.

8

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

In the recent past, the headmod (I assume?) pinned a post (for a week) by an account that had all the appearances of being a throwaway, criticizing all I/P related content.

  • The post did poorly at first, but after a week of being pinned to the top of the sub, it had the appearance of being validated by the sub.

That's the reason that I, personally, was skeptical regarding the reasons why recent Gaza videos were removed.

3

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

So sorry that happened. Was it pinned? I am looking at the mod log for that user and they don’t have any pinned posts so I’m confused as to your comment about it being pinned. FWIW our mods are vehemently against censorship of Palestine/Israel posts and have actually unmodded mods who were actively censoring either side

4

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

It was pinned for a week, yea.

You should be able to see recent actions on the post in-question.

I'm not sure if that's a feature of RES or not.

Example from my subreddit.

1

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

Understood, thanks again for the explanation.

3

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Np beautiful 🥰

14

u/ManateeDream Aug 06 '22

I’m no mod, but I report these videos because I see them get posted, then reworded with some racist/baiting headline and posted again. I am sick of it. I genuinely believe that public freakouts is the place for Karen’s freaking out in super markets, not a place for people to post GENUINE issues. I’m not king of the subreddit however, so whoever wants to post and comment is free to do so. But I’ll report and post and comment if I don’t like it. If you don’t like it, don’t subject it to the public forum.

*I am not anti Israel or anti Palestinian. I don’t know anything about their cultures or history. I simply see people posting defamatory statements intended to rile up the other side constantly and I hate that. That doesn’t help anyone.

0

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

Not all videos fit that description.

There are plenty of other geopolitical-related videos that get posted, without incident.

Even videos that fit the 'Karen' paradigm you like to see can, and sometimes are, dishonestly presented - because it comes down to the user, not the subject-matter.

All of the videos about BLM were political in nature & about human rights and they dominated the entire year of 2020.

All the videos of HK were political in nature & about human rights and they dominated 2019.

4

u/ManateeDream Aug 06 '22

I’m trying to articulate as best I can, and without getting “but what about” this to death. At the end of the day, Israel/Palestine sees a great deal of gaslighting from each side and I hate that. I am opposed to the propaganda they try to push.

4

u/s_y_s_t_e_m_i_c_ Aug 06 '22

I am opposed to the propaganda they try to push.

Who decides what is and is not propaganda? Were BLM videos adjudicated in the same way? No. They were all allowed. Lots of right-wingers got pissed about it too. So what?

You admitted you don't even follow this issue - yet, you want to censor it?

but what about

But that absolutely matters.

Either you make a rule against all political-related content (even when it is a legitimate freakout) or you decide to make a specific rule singling out content that makes Israel 'look bad'.

If that's the case, then own it.

I'm not advocating any rule-breaking.

If it's not a freakout, then remove it.

Seems like what you're saying is, 'remove anything I/P'.

1

u/ManateeDream Aug 06 '22

Alright we aren’t getting anywhere and I’m not going to exhaustively defend myself when I’ve stated my issue. Palestinians and Israelis both post partisan videos, and repost it too often and frequently in a sub I want to see people mean to service workers and getting put in their place. That’s the bottom line. It’s not the only thing I report, it’s just what I chose to reply to in a mod thread.

If I want to report content I feel violates the spirit of the group I do it. I tried explaining my rationale but it’s obviously not working.

Shout out to mods trying to fix this. 'Specially because it seems some users try desperately to post low-key racist shit or outright racist/hate shit here on the daily.

8

u/CapitalAdhesiveness3 Aug 06 '22

This subreddit needs more mods and more care to crack down on reposts, irrelevant content and all that crap. Do better.

4

u/gdpbby Aug 09 '22

um this is kind of maybe sort of weird because anytime there’s a video of someone who isn’t white commuting a crime or something the comments are 99% racism and the few people calling out the racism get downvoted to hell so are y’all REALLY permanently banning racists?

6

u/ohhyouknow Aug 09 '22

Banned folks can still vote 🤷‍♀️

3

u/gdpbby Aug 09 '22

i see the supposed “banned folks” carry on racists convos with people reply after reply after reply after reply tho? can banned people still keep replying back ?

What about the behavior by mod /u/coffeetablesex?

3

u/CuppaCoffeeJose Aug 11 '22 edited Aug 11 '22

2 days, no reply.

That should tell you precisely how actively mods intend to enforce this bullshit line of lip service.

EDIT: skippyMETS has informed me that he was banned for this comment. So, that's a big reveal on how the mods actually feel about discussing the issues in this subreddit.

Thank you! I have been super disturbed by what I’ve been seeing lately, and I’ve been trying to report every instance I find.

However - is there anything you guys can do to preempt this? It’s not just the comments. This place is flooded with troll accounts that make posts with with rage-bait titles that are sometimes complete misinformation. I, for one, would be happier if posts themselves and the people who are posting were more heavily scrutinized. Do you guys have any tools available to better screen posts so that the opportunity for these awful comment sections doesn’t even arise in the first place?

2

u/meeetttt Aug 07 '22

I've noticed in other subs requiring accounts to have a confirmed email before commenting/posting very much cuts down on the shit. Could be an option here.

No one on our team wants this to be a notoriously bigoted subreddit, yet it is... We apologize for anything you have seen here that you could have lived a happy life without seeing. We are trying.

Trying my ass I've reported a bunch of comments literally calling people subhuman that the mod team has done nothing about.

3

u/LaughingCryingEmoje Aug 08 '22

This sub has been a breeding ground for 4chan groypers, fucking basement dwellers need to go find a job and stop collecting SSI.

5

u/UnprofessionalGhosts Aug 06 '22

Thank you, mods. It’s been getting so so bad again.

5

u/the_Black_Rabbit Aug 06 '22

First off, thanks for all you and the other mods’ hard work. I know it’s an uphill battle.

My one ask is that you take harsher actions more immediately when a comment/post is reported that is clearly racist. So many times I’ve reported absolutely disgusting racist comments and get the auto response that the user was “given a warning” or “temporarily banned”. These are people that are not unaware of what they are doing. They are malicious pieces of shit spreading hate and vitriol.

Permanently ban them on the first report if their racist intent is clear.

1

u/ohhyouknow Aug 06 '22

Hm I am wondering if you are reporting them as violating subreddit rules or are reporting them straight to admin bc you will typically not receive a response about reports unless you are reporting to admin. Make sure you are selecting “breaks publicfreakouts rules” when you do report for action from mods. Also report stuff to admin but again if you’ve reported it to mods you will not receive a response at all.

4

u/the_Black_Rabbit Aug 07 '22

I’m using Apollo app so maybe it’s different for others. Here’s what it looks like:

  1. Tap to hold to report: https://pasteboard.co/MpS0WrJl0hyB.jpg
  2. Tap on r/publicfreakout rules: https://pasteboard.co/ifAq7xPn0cdB.jpg
  3. Tap on Rule 4: https://pasteboard.co/Nv571kl9ZBi0.jpg
  4. This is type of response I see: https://pasteboard.co/70ZAM9HlK67A.jpg

4

u/ohhyouknow Aug 07 '22

That looks like you are doing everything right, but that’s an admin response. So I do wonder if there is a bug in Apollo doing this. I’ve noticed that the reporting system on the vanilla IOS app has changed a bit recently too. I will bring this up with r/modsupport bc you should not be getting admin responses from those types of reports. If the other user who mentioned this issue also uses Apollo this might be a widespread issue that has been affecting our queue.

3

u/the_Black_Rabbit Aug 07 '22

Thanks for looking into it

I didn’t mean to say “immediately” as in response time I meant to say stop giving these people multiple warnings when the shit they post isn’t innocent ignorance, they should just ban the first time.

5

u/ohhyouknow Aug 07 '22

Question: are you using Apollo to browse the sub? Bc it seems like at least one other user is having this same bug when reporting using the Apollo app. We don’t give warnings for rule 4 violations. It’s permabans all the way down.

3

u/CuppaCoffeeJose Aug 07 '22

you can't expect mods to sift through Reddit 24/7 unpaid.

Yes, we can. It's a volunteer position.

You know why I don't volunteer at Home Depot? Because I don't want to work for free, so I don't volunteer.

If you don't want to do the work, don't offer to do the work. It's that simple.

3

u/TribalOrgy Aug 06 '22

Today's world: Having to tell people to NOT be a POS.

1

u/-Frances-The-Mute- Aug 06 '22

Nice to see some communication from the Mods.

Could you keep working on enforcing Rule 11? It's been better, but stuff like this still gets through

It's not a freakout. If it was O'Reilly style, losing his shit, then cool. But it isn't.

People will upvote videos they like without checking the sub. They'll post about politics wherever, because it's important to them. But this is a freakout sub. Give us freakouts, and delete the rest.

Hey, it’s a thankless job but in order for a subreddit to run someone has to do it.

Since some might not say it enough: Thank You.

-4

u/CuppaCoffeeJose Aug 06 '22 edited Aug 06 '22

TL;DR: "Well, we posted about how we're concerned. Now no one will call us enablers for refusing to ban blatant homophobes and transphobes! Be sure not to say anything bad about Israel, or we might actually have to do shit and that'll make us annoyed."

No one on our team wants this to be a notoriously bigoted subreddit, yet it is.

I think what you meant to say is "No one on the mod team wants to take any actions to stop this from being a notoriously bigoted subreddit, so it is, because we can't be arsed to remove the bigots from the conversations being held here."

Users of this sub should continue to make reports directly to the admins for site-wide violations. It's the only way to get anyone to actually moderate anything around here, and this attempt to placate the outrage over moderator inaction is just another indicator that the sub's mods are more keen on talking about problems than solving them.
