Pixar’s “Pebble” coming Christmas 2024

u/Most_Triumphant Jul 01 '22
Damn I have to feel old now since y’all didn’t immediately think of this movie.
21
u/BondageFondue Jul 01 '22
I haven’t thought about that movie in a long time! Had the VHS when I was a little boy. Honestly, when I first saw the picture I thought of the movie “Happy Feet”.

Great name choice - some species of penguin have a courtship ritual where they present their prospective mate with a pebble, and if accepted it's the beginning of their nest.

Is this a reference to the fact that some female penguins will prostitute themselves for pebbles?

I want the movie about the grieving penguins becoming friends and watching the city lights together! No romance, just a story about grief and friendship.
Edit: thank you for award kind stranger! 😊

u/Freddies_Mercury Jul 01 '22
They did the grief and friendship thing with up but goddamnit I still want this penguin film.

u/FormerLurker3 Jul 01 '22
Grief and friendship are themes worth exploring twice. Especially for a studio like Pixar.

For further evidence, see “the friend zone.”
Ya don’t wanna be “friends-zoned,” fellas. Friendship with women is not the goal, only romance! Friendship with women is a bad zone that you need to get out of and avoid at all costs!/s

u/39thUsernameAttempt Jul 01 '22
I think it would have more impact with adult male and female leads. Let's normalize platonic relationships.

u/PM_ME_UR_BENCHYS Jul 01 '22
For a recent movie, but a potential spoiler: check out "The Valet" on Hulu.

A lot of what made Up sad for me was even though he enjoyed his life with Ellie, they never really lived life to the fullest. Just work, eat, sleep, enjoy each other’s company, repeat. They didn’t even seem to have friends.
14
u/1945-Ki87 Jul 01 '22
One of the major themes of the movie was that Ellie was satisfied with her life in the end, and that it was an adventure for her. Even though it didn’t always go their way, it was still their lives and they enjoyed it, even if it was sometimes in hindsight. Ellie was content. Life isn’t built upon grand adventures, it’s built upon the little moments. They had fun jobs, they laughed a lot, they loved a lot. And I’m sure they had friends, it just wasn’t a focal point of the movie
4
u/Walaina Jul 01 '22
Sure, he had a fulfilling life with Ellie. But not one for himself. When she passes, his grief is immense. He can’t enjoy anything. The Dug series offered me a lot of closure on Carl enjoying his life outside of Ellie.
10
u/1945-Ki87 Jul 01 '22
In the end, that is part of life too, and while he had his grief, he learns to live again with Carl. Grief is a part of life, and life isn’t always perfect. He had a good life

There is a movie like this, a failed romance - a teenager falls in love with an older lady- is it “Harry and Maude”?
It’s ______ and Maude. I’ll go find it and carry it back here, drop a pebble on your webbed feet.
It’s Harold and Maude, from 1971.

u/SeasonedGuptil Jul 01 '22
Mmm, in the garden of words is similar to this as well and but really approaches the idea of finding people who support you and give you comfort as a different kind of love. I found it quite beautiful

u/TisBeTheFuk Jul 01 '22 edited Jul 01 '22
Is Harold actually a teenager, though? I always thought he was in his early 20s.

Here's the script: as in Eskimo culture, penguins of Antarctica had the same idea of sending seniors off on an iceberg apparently to their death when they got a certain age. everyone was okay with it since it was tradition and the tribe was extremely strict to code. no one questioned it except for an older female penguin who didn't believe that her was time. So she gets sent off but instead of dying, the current sends her through an exceptionally low temperature current which keeps the iceberg alive and she ends up all the way in Australia where she meets a younger penguin to befriends her and shows her all of the things she didn't know existed living on her little island tribe. The iceberg years of her life turn out to be the best times of her life and she even meets up with other senior penguins who also survived realizing that most that the tribe sent off never actually died but ended up enjoying the best of their years in Australia.

The worst part is that fucking teens are going to ruin it because they will create a shipp around those two and completely misunderstand the whole plot and message.

I want Benedict Cumberbatch to do the voiceover:
"The lighter Peng-ling is an elderly female whose partner died this year, and the darker Peng-wing is a younger male who lost his partner two years ago..."

I will forever love Benedict for his Peng-wing documentary.

Hey look at that. I genuinely didn't expect this to be real. Well done OP, providing a source and everything
9
u/Shoondogg Jul 01 '22
I mean, “he was told that” the penguins lost their partners isn’t exactly proof. The one that’s supposed to be an older female looks more like a fluffy chick to me, but what do I know.
21
u/Asmuni Jul 01 '22
No not too fluffy enough for that. You can see she has the adult waterproof suit. Plus the colony is monitored so they know every penguin and their age.

I mean, isn't that all the proof we could possibly get? Someone in the know who told us about what happened? It's not like these penguins have death certificates or anything.
I guess we could hunt down the volunteer and figure out how he knew about it, but it'll still just be taking someone's word for it.

They are on reddit, just any random scrolling should be enough to fix that..
p.s And to prove my point I saw this penguin post while scrolling on r/all, scrolled once more and ran into this "David Dowell was dared to eat gecko at a party, living through pain and agony and eventually died 10 days after. Wife said: "he was very bloated, looks like he was 6 months pregnant. His urine was black and he's vomiting green bile." So.. Yeah.. just scroll...

I miss watching the moonlight for hours with my bride.
Maybe once we can convince the kids that just because the sun is up at 11pm doesnt mean they have to be, we can watch the mist on the mountains instead.

If I recall correctly most penguin species are monogomous and will mate with the same penguin their entire life. So these two both lost their mate and have found comfort and companionship in eachother.
